Barbara Gillette is a Master Gardener, herbalist, beekeeper, and journalist with three decades of experience propagating and growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals.

Experience

Barbara Gillette is a Master Gardener, having actively explored a lifetime relationship with the outdoors and nature, resulting in 30 years of gardening experience. From sowing seed to harvest, from heirloom tomatoes to wild orchids, her gardening experience encompasses first hand knowledge of best practices for success, which she applies to her work on The Spruce's Gardening Review Board.

She has worked with the University of Kentucky Department of Agricultural Communications and with several commercial greenhouse operations and was past president of the Anderson County Farmer's Market Cooperative. Gillette’s home gardens include a large organic vegetable garden, small orchard, an English herb garden, pollinator garden, water garden, dye garden, stumpery, and prairie garden, along with numerous native plant and ornamental flower gardens. She has cultivated and planted more than 150 shrubs and trees on her eight acre property over the past 23 years.

Gillette has developed and presented programs to garden classes, clubs and organizations and has participated in the design, planting and maintenance of numerous civic gardens. 

Education

Gillette received the title of Master Gardener by the University of Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service in 2014, and a Master's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University’s College of Communications. After years of self study, she received recognition as an Herbalist from Rosemary Gladstar’s Sage Mountain Herbal Center in 2013.

Awards and Publications

Barbara received the Governor’s Service Award for work with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Native Plant Program.
