Slumber cloud core down alternative pillow on grey color blanket

The Spruce / Rachel Marek

A cooling bed pillow can help regulate your body temperature while wicking away sweat and keeping you comfortable in whatever position you sleep. However, it's important to note that pillows can't actively cool you. "Instead, think of them as temperature-regulating pillows [that] won't absorb heat like others on the market," says Logan Foley, managing editor at SleepFoundation.org. "When we're talking about cooling pillows, the marketing can be slightly misleading."

At The Spruce, we periodically test home essentials, including bed pillows. We've tested over 70 pillows in The Lab and at home—and 30 of those were marketed as cooling pillows. We put each of these pillows through a rigorous testing process, evaluating it on the quality of its materials and construction, the skin-feel of the shell, the cooling properties of the fill, and the type of support it provides for different types of sleepers. We also noted how easy each pillow is to keep clean, an important consideration if you tend to sleep hot and sometimes sweat at night.

Ahead, find the best cooling pillows to stay supported and cool at night, based on our thorough real-world testing, as well as our additional research.

What We Don't Like

If we could only recommend one pillow for hot sleepers, we'd have to go with the Eden Pillow from Coop Home Goods. Earning an almost-perfect score during our lab tests, we love the luxuriously thick and stretchy shell and adjustable fill. It's easy to add and remove the filling, as needed, and it comes with extra foam for those who prefer a firmer bed pillow.

The individual pieces of foam inside this pillow are larger and softer than others we tested, making them easier to remove or adjust without making a mess. The foam has a fluffy feel—similar to a down-filled pillow—and it even comes with a bag of extra foam for those who prefer a denser cushion.

Inside is a supremely plush blend of gel-infused shredded memory foam and ultra-fine microfiber pieces that mimic the natural loft of real down. (The memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, which means it has met specific standards for emissions that might affect air quality, such as ozone depleters and volatile organic compounds.) The unique mix promises to deliver a cooling effect while you doze. What's more, the bamboo-derived viscose rayon shell ensures breathability and draws sweat away from your body.

We noticed a slight odor upon unboxing the Eden Pillow, but it was gone once we washed the cover. Though it's on the pricier side for a single pillow, the high-quality design and fill of this option make it well worth the initial investment.

How It Performed Long-Term

We used this pillow at home for six months, raving about how it felt immediately cool to the touch and cool to sleep on all night. We love the convenience of the adjustable fill—you're practically guaranteed a perfect, customized loft with this pillow. It didn't lose its shape or show any signs of wear and tear, either. In our eyes, this cooling pillow is well worth the cost.

What We Don't Like
  • Not cool to the touch

  • Not ideal for stomach sleepers

For folks on a budget, we recommend the HIMOON pillow. It's filled with microfiber, which mimics the feel of a down pillow. While this pick didn't necessarily feel cool to the touch in our testing, we found that it had temperature-regulating properties to help prevent overheating.

The best part of this pick is how little it changes after washing. The brand recommends popping the pillow into the dryer to puff it up—which made the pillow look brand-new when we tried it. This pick proves to be durable and maintains its shape after multiple laundry loads. We loved that it didn't lose much of its loft over a week's worth of time, allowing it to stay fluffy and lifted. This can provide valuable and long-term support for side and back sleepers—which we especially loved.

How It Performed Long-Term

We took this pillow home and tested it for one month, and we noted that it allowed for airflow throughout the night and did indeed feel cooling. We didn't find the lofty pillow comfortable for stomach sleeping—with that in mind, we'd only recommend it for side and back sleepers.

What We Don't Like
  • Pillow insert isn't washable

We at-home tested the Casper Hybrid Pillow with Snow Technology, and we loved how supportive and high-quality it seemed. Most notable, though, was how cool it felt—we never had to flip the pillow to the "cool" side when using this option.

This pillow features multiple layers of foam and fiber that are designed to increase air circulation and draw heat away from your skin. When we tested the pillow, we found that it molded to our head and shoulders while still maintaining its shape after several nights of use. If you prefer a plush pillow you'll sink into, this isn't the right fit—it's quite heavy and structured. It worked well for a combination side and stomach sleeper in our testing.

Unlike some other options, the pillow itself isn't washable. However, it comes with a washable cover so you can keep things tidy. The only downside we found in testing was the price—it's certainly not a wallet-friendly option. But if you sleep cool and you have the budget to accommodate it, we would recommend it.

What We Don't Like

Though the Purple Harmony Pillow is one of the more expensive options out there, side sleepers swear by its construction. The brand uses the same cushioning technology seen in its mattresses to create a supportive base with a breathable mesh cover for a cool and comfortable night's sleep.

Made from a honeycombed GelFlex layer and Talalay latex core that reminds us of Jell-O, this pillow maintains its shape through the night and after repeated washes. The pillow feels heavy out of the package, adding to its high-quality construction and heavy-duty support. The moisture-wicking comfort will keep you cool through the night, regulating your body temperature while sleeping. Plus, the pillow stays lofted even after long-term use—no fluffing required. For side and stomach sleepers, you'll have optimal comfort, maximized by the three different height options suitable for every sleeping position.

How It Performed Long-Term

We used this pillow at home for six months, and we loved how cool and comfortable it was throughout the testing period. We never felt the need to flip the pillow to the other side because it remained cool to the touch. It's a heavy pillow—but it maintained its shape and cloud-like feel. In the case of this pillow, you get what you pay for: a high-quality, reliable pillow.

What We Don't Like
  • Loses some firmness over time

With cooling technology approved by NASA, you'll never have to flip over to the cool side of the Slumber Cloud Core Down Alternative Pillow. The 300-thread count cotton cover allows for soft, breathable comfort that releases heat and regulates your temperature through the night. We noticed that the cover felt cool to the touch and kept cool all night long. It seemed to allow for plenty of air circulation throughout the night as well.

What's more, the down alternative filling remained comfortable and supportive even after machine washing the pillow. While it appears thin, it supports the neck and shoulders, even for combination sleepers. There are two firmness levels to choose from so you can find the perfect fit for you. Plus, the website offers tons of helpful information for finding the best fit for your sleep style.

How It Performed Long-Term

When testing this pillow for six months, we were impressed with its cooling abilities, and we think it's a solid bet if you're looking for a cooling down-alternative option. Our test pillow lost some of its firmness, growing softer and fluffier with regular use. If you're a hot sleeper who prefers a soft pillow, this is a nice choice at a reasonable price point.

What We Don't Like

If firmness is a priority, the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Breeze Dual Cooling Pillow might be your best bet. We noticed the high-quality construction as soon as we started handling this pillow. The pillow features gel layers to maintain a cool-to-the-touch surface, and we noticed it helped with temperature regulation throughout the night.

It is constructed with one thick layer of Tempur material, plus layers of gel on each side to help absorb heat. With a loft of 6.4 inches, this is a thick pillow that's also on the firmer side, but it still cradles your head and neck. We noticed the material bounces right back after pressing on it—it's a responsive, adaptive option despite being firm. While the loft might be too high for many stomach sleepers, we think it could be a good fit for side sleepers and some back sleepers.

It doesn't arrive compressed, so it's ready to use right out of the box. While the core can't be washed, the cotton quilted cover is machine washable. The pillow comes with a five-year warranty.

How It Performed Long-Term

This pillow blew us away throughout six months of long-term testing. We sent it home with a hot sleeper, who appreciated its cooling effect and observed higher-quality sleep after a month of using the pillow. We even used it during hot summer months, and it held up well. Even after months of regular use, it felt durable and looked good as new. If you like a firmer pillow, we'd still recommend it.

What We Don't Like
  • Not adjustable

  • Core is not machine washable

  • Can soften over time

Tuft & Needle's Original Foam Pillow is made of a special adaptive foam, graphite, and cooling gel to support your head and neck. This design is ideal for back sleepers who crave support as well as a pillow that can draw heat away from your skin and regulate body temperature. We noticed an immediate cooling sensation that didn't subside with repeated use. The gel beads also stack up when you apply pressure and become more supportive.

The memory foam pillow is dense but lightweight and plush, and it conforms to your shape and preferred sleeping position. This pillow isn't adjustable, and the foam core shouldn't be washed in a washing machine. However, the soft, stretchy case is removable and machine washable. The pillow seems durable, as it remained both supportive and comfortable even after multiple nights. This is a universally comfortable and supportive option for every type of sleeper.

How It Performed Long-Term

We sent this cooling memory foam pillow home with a combination sleeper for long-term testing, and the 5-inch loft offered reliable support. After three months, we noted that the pillow's dense foam had grown softer with use, particularly in the center, but there wasn't any noticeable flattening. It remained comfortable for our tester, but if you prefer a firmer pillow or need that extra loft, this might not be the best fit for you.

Enjoy the luxury and benefits of silk with this Cozy Earth, which features a mulberry silk fill and bamboo-derived viscose shell. Right off the bat, we were impressed with the high-quality appearance and feel of this pillow. The cloud-like silk provides undeniable softness along with cooling benefits. During testing, we stayed cool all night long with this pick, even during a heat wave. While the filling stays consistent throughout, be warned this is not an extremely firm option.

We love that the brand provides very detailed instructions for caring for your silk pillow at home. After drying on low, the pillow maintained its shape and softness. It's undeniably expensive at $299 for a standard and $349 for a king pillow, but it comes with a 100-day trial period and a ten-year warranty so you can feel confident in your purchase. What We Don't Like
  • Not ideal for stomach sleepers

If you're open to splurging on a top-tier pillow that actually delivers on its promises, Saatva's Latex Pillow is definitely worth considering. It features gussets (extra panels of fabric to give the pillow more structure) on all four sides, thus providing head and neck support for folks who prefer sleeping on their backs or sides.

It's filled with shredded latex, a plant-sourced material with inherent temperature-regulating abilities. Latex is also antimicrobial, so it's less likely to harbor odor-causing bacteria from night sweats. The pillow had no smell when we first opened it, too.

Within the shredded latex is another small pillow filled with down-like microdenier fibers (a finer version of microfiber fill). Though you can't add or remove the latex pieces, you can take out the inner core to adjust the thickness and support. We also liked that you can remove the latex core and machine wash the organic cotton cover and outer fill layer, ensuring breathability, softness, and easy cleaning. The pillow returned to its original fluffy size after washing, but it takes a few cycles to get fully dry.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using this pillow for three months, we still love it. It's simply comfortable—and cool to boot. We found ourselves falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply after using this pillow regularly.

While the Cool Zzz Deluxe might look like your average bed pillow, it flaunts a range of impressive features and technologies. We haven't tested this option yet, but we like that the sateen cotton outer shell is smooth to the touch, breathable, and moisture-wicking, helping draw sweat away from your skin while you sleep. Just below the shell is a heat-absorbing liner to help you maintain a comfortable temperature.

Inside, you've got a special poly-fiber fill designed to mimic the loftiness and temperature-regulating abilities of real down. It's made to provide ample cushioning while conforming to your shape and alleviating your pressure points. Whether you sleep hot, are prone to night sweats, or like to switch between different positions, this pillow won't disappoint.

Pillow testing

The Spruce / Rachel Marek

How We Tested the Cooling Pillows

We researched the best and highest-rated cooling pillows on the market and selected 30 to test in  The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, and at home. We evaluate each pillow's quality, including its materials and construction. We note the comfort and how much support it offers in different sleeping positions. For cooling pillows, breathability is key—with that in mind, we handle the pillow and note if it's cool to the touch. We also observe if the surface temperature of the pillow feels noticeably different after lying on the pillow.

When real-world testing pillows, we sleep on them, wash them, and evaluate them for as long as six months. We clean the pillows according to their specific care instructions, and we note if the texture or shape changes after washing or use, which contributes to a durability score. Finally, we reviewed the results of the tests and compared that with the price of each pillow, giving it an overall value rating. We collectively tested the pillows for upwards of 3,000 hours, and we used those testing insights and additional research to compile this list.

What to Look for in a Cooling Pillow

Material

When shopping for a pillow, you'll want to consider the materials and construction of both its fill and outer cover. There are a couple of materials to source for cooling properties. "The best cooling pillows are usually made out of gel or latex and feature a cotton or bamboo fabric cover," says Foley, managing editor at SleepFoundation.org. While she notes that memory foam can trap heat, shredded options are usually a bit more breathable as they allow for more airflow. Additionally, Foley explains that pillows infused with cooling materials, such as gel, copper, or graphite, can provide a temperature-regulating effect. Our Best Overall pick, the Coop Sleep Goods The Eden Pillow, incorporates gel in its fill.

Real goose or duck down and vegan-friendly down-alternative fill fibers also tend to be relatively breathable. Those with allergies or those who prefer to avoid animal-derived products might opt for a down alternative pillow that's meant to mimic down material. The Slumber Cloud Core Down Alternative Pillow is our Best Down Alternative choice.

Foley notes the cover also helps keep you cool, so look for lightweight (preferably natural) bedding fabrics with relatively low thread counts to ensure adequate airflow. A great cover also contributes to the pillow's softness. For example, in testing we loved the feel of Cozy Earth's Silk Pillow, our Best Silk pick.

Cooling Technology

Specific cooling technology includes temperature-regulating gel, heat-absorbing liners, moisture-wicking fabrics, or a proprietary material with a unique ability to keep you at a comfortable temp throughout the night.

Some brands use fancier language than others, but we were impressed with the NASA-approved technology used by the Slumber Cloud Core Down Alternative Pillow, our Best Down Alternative option.

Care Instructions

It's important to check the care requirements before buying any type of bedding or insert. Some cooling pillows can be safely laundered in a standard washing machine and tumble-dried in a dryer. Some come with removable, machine-washable covers, and others are meant to be spot-cleaned only. When in doubt, follow the brand's recommended cleaning instructions.

Luckily, most brands include detailed instructions on their website for the best results. Some pillows are not washable at all. Ease of care is important with any type of bedding, so we made sure to factor this into our testing ratings.

If you get night sweats or just prefer cleaning your pillow on a regular basis, you may want to find one that can easily be tossed in the washer and dryer for added convenience.

Support

While staying cool is the primary goal, you’ll also want to choose a pillow that offers the right amount of support for your sleep position. For example, according to Foley, side sleepers often prefer a thicker pillow that supports the head and neck, while back sleepers need a lower pillow that supports the head, neck, and shoulders. Stomach sleepers may prefer a pillow with less loft. And if you're a combination sleeper, a supportive yet malleable or a customizable option can be a safe bet.

You'll want to not only pay attention to the loft of the pillow upon arrival but whether or not the pillow will maintain its support throughout consistent, long-term use. For many pillows, you'll likely have to fluff them rather regularly, but thicker and denser pillows will likely keep their shape without much upkeep.

FAQ
  • Who are cooling pillows good for?

Cooling pillows can be a great purchase for just about everyone, but especially for those who tend to overheat while sleeping or suffer from night sweats. Your sleep quality can be highly affected by temperature, and sleeping in a room that's too hot or cold can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. A high-quality bed pillow that pulls heat away from your body as you sleep can help your body remain at a comfortable temperature.

  • How do cooling pillows work?

Cooling pillows work by using materials that enable airflow and draw heat away from your body. While the cooling technology of each pillow can vary from brand to brand, they all have materials and fillings that can be temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking.

  • What type of pillowcase should you use with cooling pillows?

To get the most out of a cooling pillow, choose bedding that’s moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating. Some good pillowcase materials include bamboo, cotton, silk, and satin.
