Olive + Crate

The Spruce / Dera Burreson

If you tend to feel overheated at night or live in a hot climate, a set of cooling sheets may make a big difference in getting a good night's sleep. According to our research and hands-on testing, sheets that are designed to be cooling are typically lightweight and breathable. They are often constructed with fabrics derived from bamboo, linen, or cotton, and the weave can be a factor, too. "If body temperature and how you sleep is a primary concern, I usually recommend a percale weave—you don’t want a high thread count and should keep minimal layers on your bed," says Anna Brakefield, the co-founder of Red Land Cotton. "A percale weave—a basket over-under weave—is going to allow for more airflow.”

We've thoroughly tested many sheets (over 200 sheet sets and counting!) in The Lab and at home to see how they perform in real life. When we test the top sheets, we sleep on and launder them over the course of several weeks. Then we rate them based on attributes such as quality, texture, breathability, durability, and overall value. Below we've compiled the most cool-feeling, moisture-wicking options we've tested in person, plus some additional top-rated cooling sheets we found via independent research.

What We Don't Like
  • Shrunk slightly after washing

Soft, crisp, and actually cooling, the Olive + Crate Cooling Eucalyptus Sheets went above and beyond when we put them to the test, earning a perfect score in every testing category. This is a sheet set that hot sleepers will appreciate night after night, thanks in large part to the breathable Tencel material. (Tencel is a brand that produces lyocell fiber, made from wood pulp. This material is used in the best eucalyptus sheets.) When we tested these, we noted that they were exceptionally soft and cool to the touch. The sheets are finished in a sateen weave rather than crisp percale—but still, we gave them a perfect breathability score, and we appreciated their super smooth, almost silk-like look and feel.

Available in eight colors and six sizes ranging from twin to split king, each Olive + Crate sheet set comes with a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and two pillowcases. We found them relatively easy to put on the bed, which we partially attributed to the deep 17.5-inch pocket of the fitted sheet. Our only significant complaint about these sheets is that they shrank slightly in the wash, but not enough to affect their fit or overall usability. All in all, we think they're the kind of sheets you'd look forward to sleeping in at the end of the day—and we wouldn't be surprised if you find yourself hitting the snooze button just because they're so comfy.

What We Don't Like
  • Rough out of the box

Receiving perfect scores for breathability, durability, and quality, the Brooklinen Linen Sheet Set is another one of our top picks from testing. These sheets are made of linen, meaning they're lightweight, absorbent, and have a relaxed look. After testing them at home for over 20 nights, we noted that they felt dreamy to sleep on. It was relatively warm when we tested the sheets—temperatures ranged from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit—but we found that they stayed sufficiently cool. We think they're ideal for hot summer months, when you might be more prone to getting overheated and sweaty.

One of our only complaints was how rough the fabric was right out of the package. However, Brooklinen does recommend washing the linen sheets before use—and during testing, we found that the break-in period was worth it. While some luxury sheets have limited colorways, these offer plenty of choice. The sheets come in a range of neutral solids as well as vibrant, "limited edition" solids and patterns to complement your decor aesthetic. They are on the expensive side, but given how well they performed in our tests, we think they're worth the investment.

If you're only planning on using cooling sheets for a few months out of every year, you might not want to splurge on a high-end set. According to our testing, a limited budget doesn't mean you have to make major sacrifices in quality, either. Just take the Tencel Lyocell Sateen sheets from Brielle Home as an example.

These sheets offer the softness and silkiness of sateen at a reasonable price. These are also constructed from Tencel, which uses sustainably sourced hardwoods, including eucalyptus. The sateen makes for an attractive sheen to your bedding, and we found that it doesn't sacrifice that comfortable feel, either. Luckily, these sateen sheets don't overheat throughout the night. We loved how they stayed cool and breathable. They're also designed to regulate body temperature for improved sleep. We awarded them extra style points for the beautiful stitching on the included pillowcase.

What We Don't Like
  • Some loose threads throughout

Percale sheets are a popular bedding choice for those looking to stay cool at night—and for good reason. Lacostes's 100% Cotton Percale Sheets are lightweight, crisp, and breathable, making them especially suitable for those who tend to overheat at night. Although cotton often isn’t the best material when it comes to moisture management, these percale sheets dissipated moisture quickly and earned a perfect breathability score during our lab tests. And after handling the sheets, we found that they felt cool to the touch and remained that way. Based on our initial lab testing, we think these 220-thread-count sheets should provide enough airflow throughout the night to keep you at a comfortable temperature.

Despite their lightweight construction, we found that they still had a significant structure to them without feeling overly stiff. But one thing to keep in mind: When we first handled the unwashed sheets, we found them to be uncomfortable and scratchy. After just one wash, their texture improved greatly, and they felt softer and smoother. While we noticed a few loose threads on the sheets and pillowcases, they were very minor, and we didn’t find any other visible imperfections. Additionally, we were impressed with the sheet set’s durability, as they held up well after we scratched them with sandpaper and had no change in texture.

With a price of around $100 for a queen set, these sheets are definitely a steal—especially when you consider their impressive temperature-regulating capabilities, comfortable texture, and durability.

How It Performed Long-Term

When we put these sheets to the test in a real-life home for a month, they continued to impress us. The sheets fit well on our 11-inch-deep test mattress, and they didn't slip off, even when used by a self-described restless sleeper. They also continued to perform well in terms of breathability. They felt cool at night, and we think they are a great option for hot sleepers. They do come out of the dryer quite wrinkly, but we didn't notice any alteration in the fabric texture after repeated washings. If we had any larger complaint, it's that the standard-size pillows could be roomier to fully contain our test pillows.

Many of the sheets on this list are breathable but prone to wrinkles. If you prefer a smooth-looking sheet, you'll want to opt for a more wrinkle-resistant sheet set. According to our testing, the LINENWALAS 100% Tencel Lyocell Bed Sheets are a standout on the smoothness front. Unlike other options we tried, they didn't wrinkle in the wash—which is fairly impressive, considering the Tencel fabric is significantly thinner than traditional cotton.

With their soft and cool feel, these sheets wowed us in testing. Despite their lower price, we found them to be well constructed, with only a few loose threads present upon arrival. Plus, We did notice some minor shrinkage after washing, but nothing that would keep us from recommending them. You can choose from over 20 colors and eight different sizes, plus options with two pillowcases or four.

Bamboo sheets are a favorite of interior designer Amanda Leather, who notes that they can sometimes manage moisture better than traditional cotton. One of our favorite picks in this category is the 30 Bampure 100% Organic Bamboo Sheets—when we tested this sheet set, we found that they felt cool and breathable.

We appreciate that the material has a smooth, silky finish that makes slipping into bed a dream. They have a slight sheen that gives them a high-end look. After washing the sheets, they felt extremely soft. And we appreciate that the fitted sheet is designed with an extra elastic strap to keep the corners securely in place.

How It Performed Long-Term

We sent these sheets home with a self-described "average to hot" sleeper for six months. Through this long-term testing, we confirmed that these are a great option for those who sleep warm. We noted that they remained lightweight and cool in both warm and cool weather, and we enjoyed sleeping in them across seasons. The soft and silky texture continued to impress us, and they continued to hold up well to frequent use and washing. Plus, we like that these bamboo-derived sheets don't tend to wrinkle like cotton or linen sheets can.

Eucalyptus is a popular material for cooling sheets, and the Sijo AiryWeight Eucalyptus Sheets impressed us with their soft, lightweight feel in testing. We noted that they have a high-quality, smooth texture without feeling too slick. What's more, the sheets come in seven colors and six sizes, making them one of the more versatile options on our list.

We noticed that after washing these sheets, their dimensions shrank slightly—but we didn't have any issues with the fitted sheet working with the mattress, even after a month of work. The coolest of Sijo's bedding offerings, the AiryWeight sheets promise to provide a comfy sleeping experience to hot sleepers and those in warmer climates. To complete the look, you can also purchase the brand's eucalyptus comforter, duvet cover, and pillows (all sold separately).

After testing the West Elm Belgian Flax Linen Sheet Set, we can confirm that it's seriously luxurious. Not only do the sheets come in 22 color options (including a few patterns), but they are also made of 100 percent Belgian flax linen, helping you keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. While they are very soft out of the package, as with most linen sheets, they get even softer the more you use them.

After sleeping on them for almost a week, we found these sheets to be breathable, cool to the touch, and soft. We noted that they only had a slight texture, unlike more abrasive linen options. Linen sheets typically provide a lived-in look, but some might take issue with how quickly these sheets can wrinkle. We recommend using dryer balls and fluffing the sheets in between washer and dryer cycles to help reduce unsightly creases and bunches from forming.

We also love that these sheets are produced in a Fair Trade-certified factory.

They also get softer with each wash and have a casual appearance, although they can be ironed on high if you choose.

These are expensive sheets, and some of the most popular colors sell out very quickly. They also don’t offer a twin sheet option so make sure that your mattress will work with what they offer. Buffy stands behind their products, however, and offers a seven-day free trial period.

Sheet testing

The Spruce / Dera Burreson

How We Tested the Cooling Sheets

Over the last few years, we’ve tested over 200 sheet sets in The Lab and at home, evaluating them on the basis of quality, texture, breathability, durability, and overall value. In addition to rating the overall comfort and cooling properties of the sheets, we also assessed how the sheets felt right out of the package; how they looked and fit on the bed; and how they held up in the washer and dryer. We combined their insights with our independent research to bring you this list.

The Spruce Team Finds the Best Percale Sheets

What to Look for in Cooling Sheets

Material

When purchasing cooling sheets, the most common materials that you'll encounter are linen, bamboo, cotton, and lyocell (Tencel is a common brand). During testing, we had the best luck with our lyocell options like the LINENWALAS 100% Tencel Lyocell Bed Sheets, our Best Wrinkle-Resistant pick, as they were less scratchy than linen and provided a silk-like look and feel. However, the best material for you depends largely on your individual preferences. For instance, cotton has a crisper texture than lyocell and linen, which some sleepers prefer.

Weave

Tighter weaves will have a heavier heft and will often trap heat, while loose weaves breathe more and allow body heat to escape as you sleep. Anna Brakefield, the co-founder of Red Land Cotton asserts that weave is the most important factor when choosing cooling sheets. "If it’s only a cooling sensation or texture, it’s not going to allow your body to regulate heat and it’s not going to keep you cool throughout the night," she says. An easy way to assess the weave of your sheets is to hold them up to a light source: If there's very little light transfer, this means that the weave is denser; loose weaves should allow more light to pass through. During testing, all of our top picks had a high amount of light shining through the material.

Thread Count

Contrary to popular belief, a high thread count isn’t the only thing that can indicate softness. Material and weave can also have a big impact. A thread count in the 200 to 400 range is more than sufficient, especially if the material and weave are known to be soft.

FAQ
  • Do cooling sheets help with night sweats?

People who experience night sweats tend to find relief from cooling sheets. Lightweight materials help keep your temperature down while sleeping, making you less likely to sweat.

  • What are cooling sheets made of?

Cooling sheets are typically made of lyocell, linen, Tencel, bamboo, or cotton. However, there are multiple other factors that contribute to how cool a sheet set is, including weave and thread count—so material isn't the only factor to consider when purchasing cooling sheets. Percale bedding, like our Best Cotton pick, the Lacoste 100% Cotton Percale Sheet Set, is often crisp, lightweight, and breathable. But many of the sheets on this list have a sateen weave—while not as known as percale for being cooling, the above options still feel smooth to the touch and breathable.

  • Are cooling sheets more expensive than regular sheets?

There are a variety of price points for cooling sheets. The price will vary based on quality and sheet size, but you can easily find cooling sheets for the same price as regular sheets.
