Drop-leaf tables have wonderful, space-saving versatility: With the leaves in the elevated position, a small piece of furniture grows. And, they’re a far more sophisticated option than folding tables for when company comes over.

“A drop leaf table is ideal for apartments and smaller spaces, as by simply raising or lowering the sides, the overall size can be adjusted,” says New Jersey-based interior designer Kristina Phillips of Kristina Phillips Interior Design. Most—although not all drop-leaf tables—have two leaves for more options. “You may only want one side raised, both, or neither, depending on your needs,” Phillips says.

To determine the best drop-leaf tables, we consulted a design expert and considered the size, shape, style, and materials of the available options.

Our Top Picks

Best Overall

Three Posts Boothby Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table

Three Posts Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Space-saving design

  • Made with wood

  • Elegant appearance

What We Don't Like
  • Staples on underside of table

Our top recommendation is for this pedestal table from Three Posts. The tabletop is available in several colors, including black, cherry, and cinnamon, as are the legs. Consider opting for a darker shade, one of several current dining room trends. This well-made round table has two leaves that can turn down, transforming it into a rectangular table. The pedestal base and curved legs are an appealing design: no need for a long tablecloth to cover up utilitarian or unattractive legs with this table.

Plus, since the whole table is made from wood, it’s a solid and sturdy piece. No need to worry about wobbles. You can easily place this table against a wall, and have one flat down and one up. It seats two people with the flaps down, and four people when the leaves are both in the elevated position. It’s especially ideal for small spaces, like a breakfast nook or an eating area in the corner of an apartment.

Best for Small Spaces

What We Like
  • Budget-friendly

  • Small footprint

  • Comes with casters

  • Includes seating

What We Don't Like
  • Weight capacity for stools is 200 pounds

  • Some found it difficult to put together

  • Very small

This budget-friendly drop-leaf from Winsome is made from both solid and composite wood and comes with two stools. Its compact size makes it ideal for small spaces: The stools can be stashed under the table when the leaf is dropped down, and the footprint of the un-expanded table is around 30 inches long, and under 16 inches wide. With the leaf raised, two people can sit at the table for a meal or morning cup of coffee.

Also handy for small spaces: The table comes with caster wheels so that you can easily move it from one location to another. Note that some of the wheels lock so that you don’t have to worry about the table shifting positions as you eat. That said, some buyers note that they felt the wheels made the table wobble a bit, and wound up removing them. The table also includes two drawers for storage.

While the hardware for assembling this table is included, it might be quicker to augment the supplied materials with a cordless drill and wood glue. Be aware that the stools have a weight capacity of 200 pounds, and that two people seated side-by-side in the stools might find it a cramped fit. Despite these limitations, we think this table is a great option for anyone in need of a compact table.

International Concepts Small Drop-Leaf Table

International Concepts Small Drop-leaf Table

Amazon

What We Like
  • Budget-friendly

  • Small footprint

  • Available in many colors, and unfinished

What We Don't Like
  • A bit tight when four people are seated

  • Can be challenging to find chairs that fit

Unlike any other option on the list, this drop-leaf table from International Concepts is available unfinished, as well as in a variety of shades, including rich mocha and washed gray taupe. That means if you can’t find your preferred hue, you can finish or paint it the shade of your choice. And while this table has a budget-friendly price, at well under $200, it’s made from solid hardwood. You can drop either one or both leaves.

Assembly of this simple table with Shaker-style legs is simple and speedy, and it’s sturdy enough to hold a sewing machine or serve as a work desk. This piece is ideal for small spaces, and while it can seat up to four people, note that you likely won’t have room for anything beyond plates and cutlery (skip the floral centerpiece, and keep the salad bowl on the counter).

Best for the Kitchen

Winsome Space Saver With 2 Round Stools

Winsome Space Saver With 2 Round Stools

What We Like
  • Comes with storable stools

  • Adds counter space in kitchen

  • Includes drawers and towel rod

What We Don't Like
  • Drawers aren’t accessible when leaf is up

  • Only available in one finish

This practical drop-leaf table has a lot to recommend it: First off, it comes on wheels, which makes transport easy. And, it has two stools available, along with storage space in the table to stash them away. This table is ideal for kitchens, where it can provide extra counter space while you’re making a meal. Drawers and a towel rod add to its convenience. That towel rod can also be used to move the table from one spot to another. You could even wheel it out to your balcony or deck and have it serve as an outdoor table during barbeques (but note it can’t stand up to the elements, so keep it inside on a day-to-day basis and look for a more permanent outdoor side table if you want one to live outside permanently).

When you’re ready to eat, you can raise a round leaf, and the table can then seat two people. This product is easy to assemble; leave yourself around an hour for the task. Once it’s put together, the set has a solid feel—no need to worry about wobbles or looseness. Just note that one design quirk is that the drawers cannot be easily accessed or opened while the leaf is in the extended position.

Best for Company

Latitude Run Adams Drop Leaf Trestle Dining Table

Walmart

What We Like
  • Narrow footprint

  • Easy to assemble

  • Versatile

What We Don't Like
  • Somewhat flimsy

  • May require two people to assemble

If you’re looking for versatility—and a great table for when company comes over—look no further than this console and dining table from Latitude Run, which has a purposefully weathered top, almost as if it’s a farmhouse-style dining table, but with metal legs, which give it a more industrial look. The table has two leaves, and when fully extended, seats up to six people, giving it a large capacity. With both leaves down, the table has a slim footprint, making it ideal for small spaces.

Made from manufactured wood, it looks great with either long benches or individual chairs (both of which are sold separately from the table). Without the leaves extended up, this table is long and narrow, making it ideal as a console table. Consider using this in your living room or entryway and moving it when company comes over—or keep it in your dining room for everyday use. It also can be used as a sideboard or buffet table, adding even more versatility.

Best for Versatility

Ikea Norden Gateleg Table

IKEA NORDEN Gateleg Table

Ikea

What We Like
  • Can be used throughout the home

  • Offers storage

  • Space-saving design

What We Don't Like
  • Limited color options

  • Heavy weight makes it hard to move

Let us count just a few of the ways people use the IKEA Norden: As a kitchen or dining room table, of course, but also as a craft table, a gaming table, a living room console, a room divider, a side table, a home bar, a work desk—the list goes on and one. Suffice to say, this is the most versatile table on our list. This, along with a reasonable price point, makes this multifunctional piece of furniture a great addition to nearly anyone’s home. Even if you tire of it in one room, you might find it works well elsewhere. Technically, it’s a gateleg table, which means the leg folds out to support the extension.

With both large leaves down, this table has a width of around 10 inches; with the leaves up, it can fit four people. With six drawers, you have plenty of space to store napkins and cutlery (or notions and game controllers, if you’re using it as a craft or gaming table, respectively). Note that if one end of the table is placed against the wall, one set of drawers will be inaccessible.

All in all, this is a space-saving table that's both sturdy and practical. That said, part of that sturdiness involves a heavy piece of furniture—and it becomes heavier still when you fill the drawers. That means that it’s not easy to move from one location to another.

Best Wood

Room & Board Adams Drop-Leaf Table

Room & Board Adams Drop-Leaf Table

Room & Board

What We Like
  • Solid, handcrafted piece

  • Beautifully designed

  • Sturdy and durable

What We Don't Like
  • Pricier option

  • Care required with usage and cleaning

The Shaker design-style Adams table is a more high-end option. It’s made entirely of solid wood—either maple, ash, cherry, or walnut—and built by artisans in West Virginia. If you’re unsure about which of these finish options will look best in your space, consider ordering a sample for $25, or requesting photo cards, which are free.

Two leaves can be extended upward, bringing the table from 30 to 46 inches. Because it’s made from real wood, the table is incredibly sturdy and durable. The wood also means that it’s a heavier item, weighing in at 62 pounds. The only assembly required is to attach the legs.

The table has a lacquer finish, which is intended to help it hold up during daily usage. But even with that stain, this table requires additional care to help it remain looking good: to that end, plan to use coasters and placemats to protect the wood from scratches. Clean with a damp cloth and avoid cleaning products that include ammonia (like Windex), alcohol, or petroleum, as well as routine use of furniture polish.

Wayfair

What We Like
  • Offers storage

  • Double-leaf for flexible use

  • Large capacity, offering seating for up to 6

  • Available in several colors

What We Don't Like
  • Storage only available with flaps extended

  • Easier to assemble with 2 people

When you’re in a small space, you want to use every inch of it: suitcases are filled with off-season clothes, and you’ll delight in furniture that offers unexpected storage, like this Wade Logan table, which includes two shelves in the center. This table can be used for a variety of functions, from a standard dining room table to an office desk. Fold one flap up to make it large enough to accommodate four people or lift up both, and this table can seat six people. When it’s folded up, it makes for a perfect side table, entryway table, or console table against a wall. Note that the central storage can only be accessed when at least one flap is extended.

This drop-leaf table is made from manufactured wood and is available in several colors, including white marble and black walnut. While there are some wheels on this table, making it easy to open it up and support the leaves, there are no wheels on the central section, and, because it's a heavier piece, it might not be easy to move this table from one place in your home to another.

Price at time of publish: $170

Bob’s Discount Furniture

What We Like
  • Available in several finishes

  • Matching chairs available

  • Sturdy and made with wood

What We Don't Like
  • Only comes with 2 chairs

Choosing chairs to go along with drop-leaf tables can sometimes be a challenge, involving a lot of calculations about the available width between table legs. That’s where this drop-leaf table from Bob’s Discount Furniture comes in, since it’s part of a set that comes with two chairs. Note that the table can seat up to four people; additional chairs must be purchased separately.

This cottage-style dining table is made of wood, as are the two matching chairs. Weighing in at 62 pounds, the table is incredibly sturdy. Assembly is required for this set, although it’s an option to get white glove delivery and have someone unpack and assemble the table and chairs. The chairs are comfortable, and the colors are attractive. All in all, this is a beautiful set, with a great price given the high quality and sturdy make of the furniture. Getting the drop leaves in place may be a bit counterintuitive. Just note that the supports need to be pushed into the table, rather than outward.

Best Single Drop Leaf

Buylateral Tiffany Drop Leaf Dining Table

Buylateral Tiffany Drop Leaf Dining Table

Target

What We Like
  • Works well against a wall

  • Single-leaf table

  • Compact size

What We Don't Like
  • Limited color options

For both space reasons and aesthetic ones, a drop-leaf table with a single leaf can be an appealing option. This one converts to a U-shaped table when the leaf is in place, and is a rectangle without the extension. The permanent flat edge means you can always keep one end of this budget-friendly and well-reviewed table against a wall.

Made from MDF and rubberwood, this table is spill-resistant and sturdy. This table would be ideal for small spaces, from awkwardly shaped kitchens to corners of studio apartments. Matching chairs are available, but must be purchased separately. On the whole, this table offers good value and quality for the price, along with an attractive, somewhat unusual shape and convenient compact size.

Price at time of publish: $135

Shape: Square or U-Shape | Material: Rubberwood, Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) | Dimensions Without Extension: 29 x 30 wide x 30 inches | Dimensions With Extension: 29  x 43.75  x 30 inches | Seating Capacity: Up to 4

Best Modern

Holly & Martin Driness Drop Leaf Table

Holly & Martin Driness Drop Leaf Table

Walmart

What We Like
  • Sturdy

  • Space-saving

  • Modern, attractive design

What We Don't Like
  • Cannot place chairs below when both leaves are down

  • Easier to assemble with two people

  • Legs do not lock in place

The Holly & Martin Driness table seamlessly transitions from console to dining table. As a double drop-leaf table, it offers three potential configurations and sizes. Given its long, narrow shape when both leaves are dropped, there’s no space to place chairs, although it works well as a console table in this configuration.

It has a generous capacity, seating up to six people in the extended position. It has a modern look, with clean lines and industrial-style metal legs in either white or black depending on the tabletop color. Assembly is relatively straightforward, although some buyers note that it’s lengthy and easier with two people involved, and several wished there were written instructions, as well as illustrations. In particular, note that the padded end of the table legs is intended to align with the tabletop (and not the floor).

What We Like
  • Sturdy

  • Easy, fast assembly

  • Attractive and accommodates many decor styles

What We Don't Like
  • Chairs sold separately

  • Color may look different than in photos

If your preferred dining room table style goes back and forth between round and rectangle, consider this table from Ashley Furniture, which shifts shapes depending on how the leaves are positioned. With two leaves, you have the option to keep one in the down position, setting the table directly next to a wall. The table is made from wood and engineered wood, with a realistic look that might fool guests into believing it’s made without veneers or engineered wood.

Easy assembly is one of the table’s perks—it’ll take around 15 minutes to put together, according to the manufacturer. This round table seats up to four people. Stylistically, it can work with a lot of design aesthetics, including rustic, vintage, country, or traditional. Matching chairs, with similar tilt-out legs and wood, are available and sold separately. Thanks to its size, this piece would work particularly well in small dining rooms or in the kitchen.

Best for Against a Wall

Latitude Run Clarabelle Drop Leaf Dining Table

Latitude Run Clarabelle Drop Leaf Dining Table
Wayfair.
What We Like
  • Space-saving footprint

  • Appropriate for many locations

  • High weight capacity

What We Don't Like
  • Must be mounted to wall

  • Not all hardware is included

Maybe you only need a table for about 30 minutes a day, like when you’re having your morning cereal or folding laundry. In that case, a space-saving drop-leaf table that sits against the wall might be what you’re looking for. When not in use, this wall-mounted Latitude Run Clarabelle drop-leaf table can fold down so the table lays against the wall, extending out around six inches.

This three-seater table is not free-standing and must be mounted to the wall. It works well in small spaces, and can accommodate a variety of uses: a homework desk, a spot for jotting down notes, added counter space in the kitchen, and so on. With a weight capacity of 150 pounds, this table is definitely sturdy enough for eating or can even be used as a sewing table. Since it must be mounted to a wall, follow installation best practices (such as finding studs and using sturdy anchors). And, since different walls require different installation strategies, not all the hardware you’ll need to mount this product comes with it.

Final Verdict

Our top recommended drop-leaf table is the Three Posts Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table, which features elegant legs, shifts from a rectangle to a circle with the leaves up, and is available in several colors. If you’re prepared to splurge—and want a table that’ll last generations—consider the Room & Board Adams, which is made from solid wood, available in a variety of finishes, and incredibly sturdy. Another top pick, particularly if you want matching chairs, is the Bob’s Discount Furniture Blake 3-Piece Drop-Leaf Set, which comes with two chairs and is an incredibly good deal considering the materials and construction.

What to Look for in a Drop-Leaf Table

Size

Consider the size of the table both with the leaf extended, and with it closed up. “Check  for both the overall width, along with the fixed width without the leaves,” Phillips recommends. You’ll want to make sure that the table fits in your space in both configurations.

Think about how you’ll use the table when the flap is down. If you’ll most often use it in the fixed position (that is, with the leaves down) think about if the table allows for a chair or legs to fit underneath, Phillips cautions. Two people can still sit at our top pick, the Three Posts Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table, even in its fixed position, with both leaves dropped.

Material

Drop-leaf tables are most commonly made out of wood or manufactured wood. Consider which material makes the most sense in your space; while a table made completely out of wood, like our favorite wooden table, the Adams from Room & Board, will be incredibly durable and sturdy, it’ll also be quite heavy, which could be disadvantageous if you need to move it every time you have people over for a meal.

Some drop-leaf tables—such as the Winsome Suzanne 3-PC Set Space Saver Kitchen—come with casters, which makes them more mobile. Being able to easily wheel tables around is handy, but be sure it’s possible to easily lock the wheels, since otherwise they can make the table less sturdy.

Along with casters, you’ll see legs that are straight, have ferrules (aka metal caps), or have turned or claw-foot legs, Phillips says.

Style and Design

“Drop leaf tables are rooted in traditional English design, originating in the late 16th century,” Phillips says. You can find options with a small fixed part and oversized flaps, such as the Three Posts Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table or even moreso, the Wade Logan Extendable Drop Leaf Dining Table. Or, you’ll find tables with flaps that are “adding only a bit of extra surface space,” Phillips says. One example of this look is the Buylateral Tiffany Drop Leaf Dining Table, which includes only a single-leaf to offer additional space.

Always seek out furniture that matches the decor of your home, and plays to your style preferences. Some drop-leaf tables, like the Latitude Run Adams Drop Leaf Trestle Dining Table, have metallic legs, giving them a more industrial appearance. If you have a more classic or rustic style, opt for the cottage-style Blake table and chairs set from Bob’s Discount Furniture or choose the eye-catching pedestal legs of the Three Posts Drop Leaf Pedestal Dining Table

Unless you plan on always using a tablecloth, look for a table that’s in a color that matches your decor. The International Concepts Small Drop-leaf Table is a great option here, since it’s available in several colors, and also an unfinished version which you paint or finish yourself.

You’ll also want the table to be functional. “Make sure that the sides can be raised and secured properly, and that they do not sag down,” Phillips recommends. Be sure the leaf can support weight when it’s in the extended position.

When you’re choosing a dining room table—or any table—it’s sometimes tricky to find matching chairs that fit between the table legs. If that’s a concern, consider getting a set, like the Blake table and chairs set from Bob’s Discount Furniture.

FAQ
  • What is the difference between a gateleg table and a drop-leaf table?

Think of these two types of tables as cousins or siblings. They’re quite similar. While a drop-leaf table supports the flaps with brackets located underneath the tabletop, a gateleg table has extra legs that fold out for additional support of the flaps, Phillips says.

  • How does a drop-leaf table work?

Drop-leaf tables have a fixed center part, and then either one or two flaps “that fold down, almost like an apron,” Phillips explains. “When raised, they are secured with brackets under the table to stay flush with the center portion,” she says. The fixed part of the table can be oval, rectangular, or square, Phillips points out. Some tables transform from rectangular/square to rounded or U-shaped when the side pieces are extended.

  • What are the advantages of a drop-leaf table?

One of the biggest perks of a drop-leaf table is its space-saving ability. A couple living in a small space can use the table in its smaller position on an everyday basis, and then extend it out for double dates, for instance.

Why Trust The Spruce?

This article was written by long-time freelance writer Madeleine Burry, who has contributed to The Spruce since 2019. Burry wrote this article at a desk with a drop-leaf; while it’s nearly always down, when doing projects that require a lot of space, she raises the leaf and extends her workspace with gratitude for the table’s clever design. To develop this list of recommended drop-leaf tables, she consulted New Jersey-based interior designer Kristina Phillips of Kristina Phillips Interior Design for insights. With input from Phillips in mind, she carefully reviewed the specs and reviews for dozens of drop-leaf tables to determine the best options.
