The Spruce / Phoebe Cheong

In the world of vacuum cleaners, Dyson vacuums have a strong reputation for offering innovative and colorful designs and great suction power that'll track down even the tiniest pet hairs on your floors. The fully sealed system with washable filters for easy maintenance comes at a price, though. We have put over a dozen Dyson vacuum cleaners through testing in The Lab and at home to find the best option for your space.

The company's emphasis on capturing dust and allergens is definitely not something to overlook. Dyson's design manager, Josh Mutlow, points out that all Dyson models "are engineered with a six-layered advanced filtration system that captures the dust you can see and 99.97 percent of the microscopic elements of dust you can't see." The filters, which are designed to capture dust as small as 0.3 microns, are an important feature to consider. After all, you don't want to breathe in what you're vacuuming up, especially if you have allergies or beloved furry friends.

In our testing, we watched the system work in real life while evaluating each model's setup process, effectiveness, noise level, maneuverability, and emptying process. Then, we zeroed in on the our favorites. Take a look!

  • Multiple cleaning modes

What We Don't Like
  • Not ideal for cleaning stairs

  • Assembly is slightly challenging

Dethroning our previous best overall, the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra has all of the features that we've come to know (and love) about Dyson's Ball series—but this new upright model has a few extra capabilities that make it even better than its predecessors. An anti-tangle motorbar (Dyson's trademarked term for the floor head roller) is the star of the show. While the previous model, the Dyson Ball Animal 2, was geared toward high-level filtration and auto-adjusting suction, the Animal 3 Extra has both of those previous components, plus it is designed for households with pets, children, and multiple surfaces.

Setting up the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra was slightly tricky, as the instruction manual only includes photos and no written instructions. This made it difficult to discern how separate parts connect to each other, but we figured it all out in about 12 minutes! (Not bad, right?) This vacuum excelled during our different debris and surface tests, thanks in part to the various settings, which adjust the motorbar to heights based on floor type. We did notice that the Animal 3 Extra has a tendency to spit larger debris, like popcorn kernels, in front of its path before eventually sucking it up. We recommend adjusting the motorbar to the highest setting to avoid this issue.

The only other problem we noted with this vacuum is that it's not ideal for cleaning stairs. While this vacuum technically has no issue sucking up debris or hair on stairs, we see its design and weight as potential issues (not uncommon for upright vacuums). Using the stair cleaning attachment while holding onto the upright unit can be a challenge, too. For this reason, we wouldn't recommend this vacuum to users with limited mobility or a narrow staircase. The rest of the vacuum's attachments performed well during testing, and we're especially intrigued by the pet grooming tool, which can be used directly on dogs (or calm cats) to de-shed them (if they'll tolerate the sensation and noise, of course). It's not quite as lightweight as Dyson's impressive stick vacuums (more on those soon), but we think for a versatile machine that can tackle messes big and small, it's an excellent choice.

All in all, this vacuum's consistent suction, innovative motorbar, and easy-to-use attachments make it our top choice among Dyson vacuums.

  • Lightweight design

  • Good for carpeted and hard floors

What We Don't Like
  • Short battery life on max mode

  • Must hold trigger down while cleaning

Even though Dyson keeps coming out with new technology to better its appliances, the Dyson v8 Animal continues to impress since we originally tested it back in 2019—few vacuums remain that competitive for that long! It's our top budget-friendly pick because it blends powerful suction with a slightly more affordable price tag (when compared to other Dyson models). It's also extremely easy to assemble as well as break apart and store away in a closet or laundry room. Mutlow says that "a good vacuum should do four things properly: pick up the dust from the floor, lock the dust inside, expel clean air. All the while ensuring that it does not lose its suction." This vacuum checks all of those boxes.

This model's motorized cleaning head and brush bar suck up dirt, dander, hair, and other debris from the fibers of carpet and area rugs to give you a deep clean. Its included direct-drive cleaner head is designed with carpeted floors in mind. It pairs stiff nylon bristles with up to 115AW suction power to deep-clean even high-pile carpets or area rugs. While the Dyson Omni-glide+ is our pick for hardwood floors, the v8 Animal performs well on hard surfaces, too, making it an excellent pick for anyone with multiple types of flooring in their home.

As a cordless stick vacuum, this pick is also convenient to use and ideal for daily maintenance or quick cleaning sessions before company arrives. It has a built-in rechargeable battery that provides 40 minutes of run time in standard mode. Just be forewarned that the max mode delivers more power, but it shortens the battery life to under 10 minutes. (Save it for spot-cleaning, especially dirty areas.) Like many Dyson cordless stick models, we didn't love that you have to hold down the trigger the whole time you're vacuuming either. This not-super-intuitive feature makes us believe that it wouldn't be a great pick for a large home.

In typical Dyson fashion, the vacuum's design is stunning, and it comes with a wall mount so you can hang it up when it's not in use. We are confident that you'll enjoy using this Dyson vacuum daily.

  • Extremely powerful; suctioned debris just by being near it

  • All power levels proved efficient

  • Can be used with or without app

  • Laser reveals additional dust and dirt

What We Don't Like
  • Size may be cumbersome for some

If you're looking to splurge on your next vacuum, the Dyson Outsize+ should be at the top of your list. It proved exceptional with its powerful suction and sleek engineering, blowing some of our other favorites out of the water. Those features, combined with easy maneuverability and easy yet convenient technological advances make it a clear standout for us.

One feature that knocked our socks off was how the head pulls debris from corners like a magnet. Now, this head is larger than certain other Dyson models, so we had reservations about how well it would fit into corners. It turns out that just getting the head of the Outsize+ near a corner is enough to pull dust and dirt out. It has three power settings that can be selected and adjusted on the touchscreen panel, giving you easy control over your cleaning—but if you don't want to constantly adjust your settings, you won't have to because each setting proved to be efficient. Of the included attachments (multiple cleaning tools, brushes, a crevice tool, to name a few), our favorite was the Laser Slim Fluff cleaner head, which has a green laser that reveals dirt and grime that was invisible to the naked eye (be warned that once you see what it reveals, you can't unsee it—until it's vacuumed up, of course).

We also love that you can effectively use this vacuum with or without the app, Plus, it's the only Dyson designed with two batteries, so you can clean twice as long without pausing to recharge (a regular complaint that we hear with cordless vacuums). All in all, this is an extremely impressive machine, and if it's within your budget, we definitely recommend it. The one area of caution we'd offer is that its size (more than 4 feet tall) can feel unwieldy, so expect that it may take some getting used to.

What We Like
  • "Point and shoot" dust bin empty process

  • Extremely maneuverable and agile

  • Three power levels and five attachments

What We Don't Like
  • Power button needs to be pressed while in use

We were thrilled at how this model evaporated everything from dust bunnies and fuzz to large pieces of debris, like pretzel and cracker crumbs, all while being super easy to operate. The power of its three motor levels, combined with the five attachments (including a hair screw tool designed for—you guessed it—hair of varying lengths), make for an efficient and effective combination. If you're constantly vacuuming up after a cat or dog (or a human) that sheds, you'll be pleased with the results.

We found its shape and size to be lightweight and maneuverable, but nowhere near flimsy. It's also a great fit for homes with stairs, too, as we had no trouble moving it up and down stairways in our home testing. Its handle can move in a full 360-motion, so you can angle it around corners, into small spaces, and under furniture, and those aforementioned attachments will really help you reach anywhere that a pet might hang out or hide. It's also super easy to empty the dust bin, and even better, it has a mechanism that allows you to push the debris out (as opposed to reach in with your hands to tug or pull at it).

It's worth mentioning that, like a number of other Dyson models, users need to manually hold the power button when it's in use, which may not suit everyone. We really don't have a lot of complaints about this machine so far, but are continuing to test it (along with other vacuums recommended for pet hair) and will report back with our findings.

What We Like
  • Design makes it easy to maneuver

  • Great at picking up pet hair

  • Head self-adjusts to carpet height

What We Don't Like
  • Hair and dust get stuck in the canister

  • Struggles on high-pile carpet

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 Upright Vacuum offers reliable performance and powerful suction, alongside a clever design and impressive maneuverability for an upright vac. It's fairly straightforward when it comes to Dyson offerings (it doesn’t feature new Dyson innovations like the Dyson v15 Detect+'s laser for counting captured dust particles, and it lacks the ability to convert into a handheld vac), but there's still lots to appreciate here. It offers a respectable 196AW of suction power. Plus, it's well-suited for most types of flooring, although we found it a chore to use on high-pile carpet since it required lots of muscle to keep the vacuum moving. However, all of the effort paid off with a canister full of cat hair, a very satisfying sight during our testing process.

Notably, the upright-style vacuum is quite heavy, but we think the design keeps the weight from being too problematic. Despite weighing over 15 pounds, we found the vacuum to be manageable in our at-home testing. We think it benefits from a bottom-heavy design, and the ball base makes it easy to swivel and maneuver. Plus, because most of the weight sits at the bottom of the vacuum, it doesn't feel like it'll easily tip over.

While the vacuum is quite loud, you'll enjoy the whole-machine filtration, as well as the motorized brush bar and self-adjusting cleaner head for effective cleaning on both bare floors and rugs. The washable filter and quick-release dust bin make for easy maintenance, too. Overall, we think this vacuum is a great pick.

What We Like
  • Pivoting head for easy maneuvering

  • Push-button operation

  • Dual soft roller cleaner head

What We Don't Like
  • Small dust bin

  • Battery life could be better

  • Only suitable for hard-surface floors

Equipped with dual soft roller cleaner heads, four 360-degree casters, and an articulating, or jointed, neck, the Dyson Omni-glide+ Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner was engineered to do one thing exceptionally well: clean hard-surface floors. Whether you push or pull the vacuum cleaner, the Omni-glide+ will just slide along, capturing dust and debris in its path with its dual soft rollers.

We were pleased with how easily this vacuum transitioned across different hard floor surfaces, including hardwood and tile. It's also extremely lightweight, and in our lab, we were able to lift it with very little effort. When we weighed the vacuum with a luggage scale, we found that it clocked in at just 2.52 pounds (lower than the manufacturer's listed weight of 4.19 pounds) These features also help make it easy to move, including around and under furniture. While a lightweight design and maneuverability aren't necessarily unusual among cordless stick vacuums we've tested, the combination was still impressive to us.

The most obvious downside to this vac is that it isn't designed for carpet. Other drawbacks we found in our testing were that the dust bin is rather small, so it requires frequent emptying, and the battery life could be too short to fully clean a large home. On the other hand, the push-button operation is a standout feature. Instead of holding a trigger down to activate suction, like you would with Dyson's v8 Animal, simply select the button you'd like to control the operation and mode of this cordless vacuum. While this Dyson vacuum for cleaning hardwood floors is an expensive option for a single purpose, it’s an excellent choice for homes designed primarily with tile, wood, or laminate flooring.

What We Like
  • Hair screw tool

  • LCD display screen

  • Whole-unit filtration system

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

  • Top-heavy design

We confess that during a previous round of testing, we weren't impressed by the Dyson v15 Detect+ Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, because it only performed somewhat well for its hefty price. However, after additional tests, we're now big fans. We've grown to love how this model is specifically designed for picking up dust, debris, and fuzz as it easily transitions between different flooring types.

While this vacuum is specifically designed with pets in mind (we had previously named it a "best for pets" pick), there's lots of room for its efficient and effective performance to suit pet-free households, too. We saw it lift hair from carpet and hard flooring with ease, and we especially appreciated the hair screw tool, which is designed to pick up hair from upholstery. Like Dyson's other vacuums, this option features a whole-unit filtration system that removes 99.97 percent of particles, dust, and allergens, which is not only great for households with pets, but for anyone who wants to limit potential irritants in their home.

Although this vacuum has a relatively average noise level compared to other vacuums, it was loud while picking up large debris from the floor. However, the LCD display screen reports on dust particle metrics, and the vacuum uses this data to automatically increase suction power as needed, which is an interesting and advanced feature that gives you increased cleaning performance and balanced battery life. Dyson advertises that this vacuum's deep clean brush has three settings to adjust the height of the roller, but we could not tell a significant difference in the brush head's cleaning on each setting—it performed well on each of them.

This model is top-heavy, like most cordless stick vacuums, so we recommend storing it on the wall mount. All in all, we think this vacuum is a great option (but we recommend waiting until it is on sale, since it is quite an investment).

How We Tested the Dyson Vacuums

During our multiple vacuum tests, we have tested over 200 vacuums side-by-side in The Lab and at home, many of which have been Dyson picks. To start our lab tests, our testers unbox and complete the setup for each vacuum, timing how long it takes to complete this process and rating how helpful the instructions are. Next, they evaluate each vacuum's effectiveness by using it on low-, medium-, and high-pile carpet and hardwood floors. Each vacuum is tasked with cleaning up measured amounts of hair, popcorn kernels, and Cheerios. During this test, we note how many passes it takes each vacuum to clean up the materials and whether materials get caught in the brush roll. We also consider the vacuum's weight and portability.

Testers note how long cordless models stay charged and how much charge they come with straight out of the box. We gather insights on how each vacuum navigates our living room-inspired obstacle course—which leads to our maneuverability rating—and whether their bins are difficult or easy to empty. Some picks are tested at home, either before or after these lab tests, and are brought through real-world environments and situations. They are rated on the same attributes as the vacuums in The Lab. When all is said and done, our editors and writers take the consistently applied testing data, as well as additional research, and boil it down to the Dyson vacuums we believe are the best.

What to Look for in a Dyson Vacuum

Type

The type of Dyson vacuum you pick depends on your cleaning preferences and lifestyle. The brand keeps things simple with a wide selection of upright and cordless stick vacuums, and a few options for canister and handheld models. When deciding on the type for your household, keep in mind that upright vacuums typically offer the most suction and dust bin capacity. Some cordless models offer as much suction as a full-size upright vacuum and can be better for getting into the tight spots in your home. Usually, lightweight stick vacuums are most ideal for everyday cleanups, while a handheld vac is ideal for spot cleaning.

"Cordless models not only reach tight spaces you’d never be able to access with a corded, upright machine, but you are also achieving the deep clean you need to maintain a clean and healthy home," notes Dyson's design manager, Josh Mutlow. This is particularly true of Dyson models that are equipped with whole-unit filtration systems and powerful suction, like the Dyson v8 Animal or Dyson v15 Detect+.

Corded vs. Cordless

Perhaps the biggest factor to consider when researching a Dyson vacuum is whether you prefer a corded or cordless vacuum cleaner. Corded vacuums, like the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra, are great for deep cleaning sessions—where you want a seemingly endless supply of suction power. Dyson’s corded, upright vacuums also have larger dust bins, resulting in fewer trips to the trash can. Most models have cords that are 30 feet in length, so you won’t have to switch outlets over and over.

The brand’s cordless vacuums have skyrocketed in popularity and are worth considering. Improvements in battery life—along with the transition to a click-in battery pack on specific Dyson models (like the Outsize+) have made them significantly more appealing and realistic.

Compatible Floor Types

Dyson’s upright vacuum cleaners are generally recommended for all floor types, while the cordless vacuum cleaners have various cleaning heads that are optimized for specific types of flooring. The soft-bristled roller is usually the best choice for hard-surface floors, like wood, tile, or laminate. When it comes to cleaning carpets and rugs, a vacuum with a motorized cleaning head with bristles (like the Dyson v8 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner) will better extract hair, dirt, and debris.

If your space has a combination of flooring, and you're set on a cordless vac for its convenience, look for a model that includes interchangeable cleaning heads.

Included Accessories

The accessory package of each Dyson model varies, but most include standard attachments, such as a crevice tool or combination duster. However, you should pay attention to specialized accessories included with each vacuum, like a mini motorized tool. Pet owners will also appreciate the new hair screw tool, an accessory that's specifically designed to capture pet fur and long hair. It comes with the Outsize+, the V15 Detect, and the Cyclone V10 Animal.

You can get a quick idea of which accessories are included with a Dyson vacuum based on its name. Vacuums with the "Motorhead" designation are usually basic and include minimal accessories. The "Animal" version includes additional accessories, though they may vary by model. For newer product releases, Dyson has switched up its product designation to include a "+" symbol for models that include additional vacuum features or accessories.

FAQ
  • How do I empty a Dyson vacuum?

As soon as your model's dust cup reaches its maximum capacity, usually denoted by a line on the cup, it's time to empty it. Waiting and operating your vacuum with a full dust cup will diminish its overall efficiency and cleaning power.

If you have an upright or canister model, lift the cup away from the body of the vacuum by its handle. Hold it over the trash, and press the button on top of the cup to empty it. If your model is a stick vacuum, hold it over the trash by the handle, and pull the release lever to empty the built-in cup.

  • How do I clean a Dyson vacuum?

After emptying your Dyson's dust cup, rinse it out with water. Dyson's reusable filters should be cleaned the same way, with nothing more than cold water. The rest of the interior can be cleaned with a dry dust rag and can of compressed air. Don't forget to remove any hair from the brush bar—either manually or with a pair of scissors. Once you've finished cleaning your Dyson vacuum, make sure all parts are dry before reassembling the machine.

  • How long do Dyson vacuums last?

All Dyson machines come with a Dyson warranty, but its length will depend on which machine you choose. Cordless Dyson vacuums are covered for two years, while corded models are covered for five. Under this warranty, Dyson will repair your vacuum and replace its parts as needed to help ensure its continued performance for years after you purchase it. Warranty aside, your Dyson's lifespan will depend on how much you use it and what you do to maintain it.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Erica Puisis has been a writer for The Spruce since 2017, specializing as a product researcher for large and small appliances. For this piece, she researched the complete lineup of Dyson vacuums, comparing the features and benefits of a dozen cordless, upright, canister, and handheld models. Each was evaluated based on its features, cleaning modes, battery life, and accessories. Research included reports from The Lab—along with observations from at-home product testers and trends among customer reviews. She also spoke with Josh Mutlow, Dyson's design manager, to learn more about the technology and thought behind the company's products.

Emma Phelps, an associate commerce editor for The Spruce, and Dena Ogden, commerce writer for The Spruce, also assisted in updating this roundup to include a few of the latest Dyson models that we've tested in The Lab.
