Nest Bedding Luxury Eucalyptus TENCEL Sheet Set

Dera Burreson

If you're a hot sleeper or live somewhere with warm temperatures, investing in a set of eucalyptus sheets is a great way to avoid night sweats. Lightweight and often cool to the touch, these sheets combine softness with all-night comfort. Another benefit is the material's breathability, says James Higgins, CEO of Ethical Bedding. "Eucalyptus's ability to wick moisture away makes it perfect for bedding and clothes," Higgins explains.

We researched and tested some of the best eucalyptus sheets available and assessed their comfort, breathability, quality, and value. Then we took them home to see how they performed over the course of several weeks. Using our testing insights and additional research, we compiled this list of high-performing sheet sets made with eucalyptus-derived material.

What We Don't Like
  • Slight wear and tear with regular use

The softness, cooling capabilities, and design-forward look of the Olive + Crate Cooling Eucalyptus Sheets earned them a perfect rating across the board in our lab testing, as well as the top slot on our list. The fabric feels silky but not slippery, and luxuriously soft. We loved lying on the sheets in our testing, and we raved about their smooth texture.

We especially appreciate the design-forward color options and reasonable price for this pick, which only gets softer with each wash. You'll also enjoy fuss-free bedmaking with 17.5-inch deep pockets and elastic bands for the corners of your fitted sheet, and a small tag to indicate which side goes on the top of your mattress. Plus, the nearly zero-waste production process uses renewable plantation eucalyptus that uses less water than cotton or linen.

How It Performed Long-Term

We tested these sheets for three months in a real home. As is to be expected of eucalyptus, these sheets kept us cool all night long. According to a hot sleeper who long-term tested them, their coolness can help to improve sleep on warm summer nights. They continued to feel soft. One of the pillowcase seams did begin to split after three months of testing, which we found to be an inconvenience but one that could be remedied with a simple sewing repair.

While Tencel sheets are naturally cooling, the SHEEX Arctic Aire Tencel Sheet Set gets even more cooling power from its patented SHEEX CoolX Technology, which wicks away moisture and keeps your temperature down while you sleep. Made from Tencel lyocell with a thread count of 300, the sheet set proved to be extra soft, smooth, and breathable in our lab tests. The sheets wick away moisture for sweat-free sleep, and they help regulate body temperature for all-night comfort.

The comfy eucalyptus sheet set is easy to machine wash, and we didn't observe any quality issues like loose threads before or after washing. Each size includes a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillowcases. The queen and king-sized sheets fit mattresses up to 19 inches, so this set is a good choice for thick mattresses. Just keep in mind that the color and size options are fairly limited.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using these sheets for one month, we confirmed that they are cooling and breathable. The thoughtful construction made all of the difference, particularly when testing on the hottest days of summer. Plus, we appreciated that the fitted sheet stays more snugly on the mattress than many other sheets we've tested. We just wish they were offered in more colors and sizes.

What We Don't Like

Eucalyptus sheets are known to keep you cool, and the AiryWeight Eucalyptus Sheet Set from Sijo is no exception. In our testing, we loved how lightweight, smooth, and comfortable these sheets felt. The fabric also has a sheen on the surface for a luxurious and expensive look. And with a price point of just over $100—without a flat sheet—we think they're a solid choice for cooling sheets that won't break the bank.

While the care instructions are simple, we noted a bit of shrinkage after washing; but they still fit snugly on the bed. After washing, you may find these soft sheets become even more of a dream to sleep on.

How It Performed Long-Term

On top of being super silky, we found that these sheets felt cool and breathable in our long-term testing with a self-described hot sleeper. If you're looking for a set of high-quality cooling sheets, these certainly are worth a try.

What We Like
  • Breathable

  • Uses botanic dyes

  • Fully biodegradable and compostable

What We Don't Like
  • Expensive

Buffy’s Eucalyptus Sheets have earned raves for being super soft and cool to the touch, and they got a perfect overall score when we sent them out for at-home testing. The breathable sheets are made from eco-friendly TENCEL lyocell, made from sustainably sourced wood. The four-piece sheet set also comes in six botanic-dyed shades, like the pink blush color that’s dyed with gardenia, walnut, and turmeric. Because they're created with Tencel lyocell fibers and dyed with botanic dyes, these sheets are biodegradable and compostable.

In the lab, we found these sheets to be luxurious and soft, and since they're on the thin side, they also feel lightweight and breathable. We noted the impressive quality of the seams, as well. They’re easy to care for by machine washing and drying, and the comfy sheet set gets softer every time you wash them.

What We Like
  • Cool to the touch

  • Moisture-wicking

  • Gets softer with each wash

What We Don't Like
  • Wrinkles easily

  • Fitted sheet can come loose

Eucalyptus sheets have earned a reputation for being softer and more moisture-wicking than cotton, and the popular Eucalyptus Tencel Luxury Sheet Set from Nest Bedding promises to get softer and comfier each time you wash them. The Tencel fabric is made from renewable wood sources and uses less water than cotton, making it a go-to option for eco-conscious shoppers.

We were pleasantly surprised that the sheets felt cool to the touch—and remained so—throughout our lab testing. Plus, these eucalyptus sheets only get increasingly more buttery soft with washing and wear. The fibers wick moisture away from the body to make a difference in body temperature, and we noted that the sheets would be ideal for hot summer nights. We noticed no visible difference in the appearance and feel of the sheets after washing, adding to this pick's value.

If you're a fan of silky sheets, you'll appreciate this pick. However, because of how silky soft the sheets are, you may notice that the corners of the fitted sheet pop off the mattress. You can choose from a range of colors like classic white or a fun yet mature peach or sage green.

How It Performed Long-Term

When we took these sheets home for long-term testing, we absolutely adored sleeping in them, citing their wonderfully cool and buttery soft feel. Like with our lab testing, we noted that the fitted sheet was prone to popping off the corners of the bed overnight. We attributed this to the silkiness of the fabric and the fact that a restless sleeper was testing the sheets. After five months of use, a tear appeared in the fitted sheet, too. This was a big disappointment, as the sheets seemed durable during lab testing. Given how much we loved the texture and cooling capabilities of this set, we've decided to keep this set on the list—but we do not recommend it for restless sleepers who might toss and turn so much they inadvertently tear the fabric.

What We Like
  • 20-inch pocket is great for thicker beds and mattresses

  • Soft-yet-crisp eucalyptus lyocell

  • Wash and wear without wrinkles

What We Don't Like
  • Corner seams aren't the strongest

Dreamcare's 100% Eucalyptus Sheets are a great choice for those with extra-thick, extra-tall mattresses. Where the average set of sheets might pop off the mattress corners night after night, this sheet set will stay securely in place and fully cover those extra inches. Made out of eucalyptus Tencel lyocell fibers, these sheets strike a happy balance between silky and crisp. They're a bit thicker than some other eucalyptus sheets we've tested, but they still maintain plenty of breathability, and they didn't feel noticeably heavy when we laid in them.

Best of all, these deep pocket sheets are made with extra details that make them easy to slip onto taller mattresses. While most sheet pockets max out at around 16 inches, these are designed to fit mattresses up to 20 inches tall. The fitted sheet also features elasticized corners for a secure fit and two built-in side pockets that can hold bedroom essentials like remotes, books, and smartphones. Plus, we noted in testing, you might find that these sheets become even cozier with use, and they come out of the dryer much less wrinkled than other options we've tried.

What We Like
  • Very breathable and cool to the touch

  • Soft, smooth texture

  • Durable cotton and eucalyptus blend

What We Don't Like
  • Easily wrinkled

If you enjoy the feel of cotton sheets and aren't quite ready to make the full switch to eucalyptus-derived fabric, Molecule's Luxury Sateen Performance Sheets are a great choice. Made from a blend of Tencel lyocell and long-staple cotton, the 300-thread count sateen sheets are tightly woven and feel crisp and smooth. In our lab testing, we found that they're cool to the touch and moisture-wicking, and we gave them a perfect score in our breathability tests.

In addition to getting the best of both cotton and eucalyptus in one set of sheets, this bedding set comes in four color choices and sizes from twin to California king. We also appreciate that the fitted sheet has a "top" label so it's easier to make the bed. Molecule describes the material as wrinkle-resistant, but we found that it's quite prone to wrinkles, even once stretched out on your bed. So if you prefer a pristine, wrinkle-free sheet set, these might be cause for frustration.

How It Performed Long-Term

After using these sheets for three months in the real world, we found they held up to the cooling reputation they garnered in our lab testing. They continued to feel soft and smooth, and we didn't notice any durability issues after repeated use and washing, either. We appreciated the not-too-silky feel of the Tencel-cotton blend, as well as how lightweight and breathable they felt. We think they're a solid choice to keep all kinds of sleepers, even hot ones, comfortable throughout the night.

Final Verdict

Overall, our top choice is the Olive + Crate Cooling Eucalyptus Sheets, which earned perfect scores in our testing for their smooth, silky feel and cooling abilities. We also love Sijo's AiryWeight Eucalyptus Sheet Set, which is highly cooling and helps regulate temperature for hot sleepers.

Other Options We Tested

Eucalypso Classic Sheet Set: While this brand's sheets have gotten a lot of buzz online, we were disappointed by the performance of this set. The sheets were smooth out of the package, but the texture changed drastically after washing them. They became very rough and even had some pilling. All in all, we determined them to be overpriced (about $250 for a queen set) in our testing. They also warmed quickly, so we certainly wouldn't recommend them for hot sleepers.

Sheets & Giggles Eucalyptus Sheet Set: We enjoyed the smooth, soft feel of these sheets, as well as their thickness. However, even prior to washing the sheets, we noticed loose threads and issues with the stitching along the seams. Given the price point of this set ($190 at time of publish), we would expect them not to have quality issues from the start.

Queen's Linen Lyocell Sheets: We ordered a set of these sheets and were pleasantly surprised by the texture, breathability, and overall quality. However, we noticed one glaring issue: The tag on the sheets listed the material as "100% Egyptian cotton," not the eucalyptus-derived lyocell listed online. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this pick if you're looking for a eucalyptus sheet set.

How We Tested the Eucalyptus Sheets

We've purchased over 30 eucalyptus-derived sheet sets to put to the test at The Lab in Des Moines, Iowa, then we took most of the sheets home to evaluate their long-term performance. According to our own rating system, we evaluated the comfort, breathability, quality, and overall value of each sheet set both in the lab and after several weeks of at-home use.

Throughout the different stages of our testing process, we had testers take note of how sheets felt at the time of arrival and whether or not they held up well after washing and drying. Finally, we took their insights and our editorial research to compile our recommendations. We've tested upwards of 200 sets of sheets in our lab and at home to date, so we're confident in our expertise and product selection.

What to Look for in Eucalyptus Sheets

Fiber

When choosing eucalyptus sheets, you’ll see options labeled as 100 percent eucalyptus and Tencel lyocell. In general, eucalyptus takes less water to grow than cotton, so it has become a popular eco-friendly choice for bedding. Similarly, Tencel-branded fibers are made from the sustainably sourced pulp of eucalyptus (and other wood) and produced using environmentally responsible processes. Our Best Overall pick, the Olive + Crate Cooling Eucalyptus Sheets, is made from Tencel fibers and scored high marks in our testing for its silky and luxuriously soft feel.

Color

Most eucalyptus sheet sets only come in solid colors, but there are usually several vibrant options and classic neutral shades available to choose from. While patterned eucalyptus sheets are less common, there are a few options for print lovers out there, too. You can opt for classic shades like white and ivory, or add some color into your bedroom with alternatives like the Buffy Breeze Sheet Set (our Best Lightweight pick), which comes in botanic-dyed hues like blue and pink.

Price

If you're used to budget-friendly cotton or microfiber sheet sets, you'll discover that most eucalyptus sheets are on the pricey side. However, if you want to try eucalyptus sheets without spending a lot, it's possible to find great options at wallet-friendly prices. Our Best with Deep Pockets pick, Dreamcare's 100% Eucalyptus Sheets, clock in at about $100 for a queen-size set.

FAQ
  • What are eucalyptus sheets made of?

Eucalyptus sheets are produced from soft Tencel lyocell that's made from processed eucalyptus. The eucalyptus is first turned into wood chips and processed to form a pulp. They are then dissolved and extruded to get soft fibers.

They're also a great sustainable option compared to other materials. "Eucalyptus bedding is also made in a closed-loop system, as opposed to linear," says James Higgins, CEO of Ethical Bedding. "This means more than 99 percent of the solvent amine oxide, water, and natural additives to make a single batch of product is stored and reused for future batches. This minimizes the ecological footprint and reduces waste and impact from the manufacturing process," he adds.

  • How do you wash eucalyptus sheets?

In general, you should wash eucalyptus sheets in cold water and on your washing machine's gentle setting. To avoid damaging the fabric, use a mild detergent and wash them separately from your other laundry. Don't use fabric softener or bleach on eucalyptus sheets, otherwise you might reduce their quality and shorten their lifespan.

Higgins also shares a few tips to prevent wrinkles. "If you take them immediately out of the washing machine and give them a good shake, they should be free from most wrinkles. It's important to remove the sheets from the drum as soon as possible once dry to reduce any wrinkles," he shares.

  • What do eucalyptus sheets feel like?

Smooth and silky, eucalyptus sheets feel like a mix between silk and cotton. They're cool to the touch, with moisture-wicking properties and breathability. "When you try Eucalyptus bedding, it is so unbelievably soft that it’s hard to imagine it was made from wood. It has the ability to mimic the feel of cotton, silk, suede and even leather depending [on] the style you buy," adds Higgins.

  • What are the benefits of eucalyptus sheets?

The most known benefit of sleeping on eucalyptus sheets is the coolness they often provide throughout the night. This comes from the material's ability to wick away moisture and regulate temperature.

Tencel lyocell also has antibacterial properties. Higgins says, "Eucalyptus bedding limits exposure to pathogens and germs." If you have sensitive skin, you might try a Tencel option to see if it's a fit.

You also won't have to worry about buying new sheets every year because eucalyptus-derived sheets are extremely durable. They're made to withstand many washes and resist shrinkage or damage.

  • How durable are eucalyptus sheets?

In general, the Tencel lyocell fibers that make up the weave of eucalyptus sheets are more durable than your typical sheet set. You can expect to get a longer lifespan from eucalyptus sheets compared to cotton linen alternatives. However, this material is a bit more susceptible to shrinkage, so you may see a slight change in sheet size after the first wash.
