Best Places to Buy a Bed

The Spruce / Chloe Jeong

If your bedroom needs an upgrade, it may be time to consider a new bed frame—and finding a top-tier bed frame can do more than just elevate how your space looks. “The proper bed frame and size give you sufficient space and comfort to support your body during its sleep,” says Annika Carroll, women’s sleep and health coach and CEO of Sleep Like a Boss.

To help you in your search, we researched dozens of brands, considering their style offerings, price points, and durability needs. In addition to speaking with Carroll, we also consulted with interior designers Tina Ramchandani and Micky Klein for tips on using a bed frame to optimize the design of your bedroom.

In the end, some of our favorite brands include Wayfair, CB2, and Anthropologie, all of which offer a wide range of products, different price points, and plentiful customer reviews.

CB2

CB2 Camerano Eggshell Upholstered Queen Bed

CB2

What We Like
  • Stylish options

  • Many choices offer in-home delivery, which includes assembly

  • Wide range of price options

  • Many frames are CB2 exclusive

What We Don't Like
  • Limited number of retailers to visit

  • Limited to modern style

CB2 is the sister brand of Crate and Barrel. But because of its ability to offer modern flair to spaces at more affordable prices, it could more accurately be described as the brand’s cool younger sister. The first CB2 was launched in 2000 in Chicago, and since then it has grown to feature 19 total storefronts across the United States.

With 59 bed frames to choose from on the company’s site, you won’t be shortchanged when seeking out something to fit your needs. We really love the Camerano Eggshell Upholstered Queen Bed for its unique-looking angled head and footboards. Plus, the upholstery fabric is easy to clean and stain-resistant in case you accidentally spill something on it.

While the options on the website are elegant and enticing, if you are looking for something more classical and ornate, you may be out of luck with CB2. That being said, many of the pieces it sells are CB2 exclusive, so you know you’re getting something unique when you spend your money there.

Floyd

Floyd

What We Like
  • Modular

  • Durable materials

  • Easy assembly

What We Don't Like
  • Only two options

  • One-year warranty

Rooted in a low-waste philosophy since 2013, Floyd founders Kyle Hoff and Alex O’Dell have built the brand from a single product into a wide line of items that are as sleek as they are functional. Today, Floyd features a robust set of products for the bedroom, living room, storage, and outdoors that you can order from the company’s website.

When it comes to bed frames, Floyd has two options: The Bed Frame and The Bed Frame in Color, which gives its original bed frame a bold upgrade. “(While) bed frames are really a style preference,” says Klein, it’s vital that you also “take into consideration the quality and durability.” Fortunately, both Floyd options are built with natural and renewable materials that don’t just look great but also work great. The birch veneer provides durability and a clean wood finish, while the powder-coated steel is designed to limit waste in the building process.

But what this bed frame is really known for is its modularity. Instead of the waste that comes attached to outgrowing a bed, Floyd’s bed frame can actually be adjusted in size by adding panels (which is great if you’re not sure what size is ideal for you just yet). Plus, there are additional ways to customize the bed frame, including add-ons like under-bed storage, an upholstered headboard, and a bedside table. Thanks to the limited amount of parts, you’ll be able to transport the frame easily during moves.

One drawback that some customers have found with their Floyd Home bed frame is that the expansion kit is a bit expensive. But if you’re someone looking to avoid waste, this is a small price to pay to keep using the same bed frame. Plus, with over 1,000 5-star ratings on the website, both beds seem worth the initial investment.

Wayfair

Wayfair.
What We Like
  • No shortage of choices

  • Very affordable options

  • Free shipping on many items

  • No shortage of reviews

What We Don't Like
  • Not all products use durable materials

  • Some products are very difficult to build

While its two founders, Niraj Shah and Steve Conine, began working together in the early 2000s, Wayfair, as we know it online, didn’t come to be until 2011. Since then, the online giant has become a go-to shopping destination for millions of home-related products, ranging from bathroom accessories and door hardware to, you guessed it, beds.

Today, there are thousands of different bed frame options on the site, guaranteeing that you’ll find something that you’ll love. In particular, we like the 14-inch Steel Bed Frame by Wayfair Sleep. With twin, full, queen, and king size options, you’re sure to get what you need. The minimalist frame comes with slats, so no box spring is needed. Plus, a queen-size version of the bed is priced at just under $150, making it one of the more affordable options out there.

One drawback with this bed frame is that the directions are a bit unclear. While the overall assembly doesn’t take particularly long, some customers felt that trying to figure out the instructions should have been easier. All in all, though, customers like Wayfair for the wide range of choices, and more specifically, the wide range of affordable options.

Amazon

Amazon.
What We Like
  • Most bed frame options by far

  • Wide price ranges

  • Includes plenty of brands to choose from

What We Don't Like
  • Need a Prime membership to get Prime features

  • No stores to see in person how you like the product beforehand

At this point in time, it feels like Amazon’s reputation precedes it. Since its inception in 1994, the company has gone on to become the undisputed retail go-to on the internet. Today, you can purchase virtually anything you want on the website and have it delivered, often within a day.

When you search bed frames on Amazon, you are met with more than 10,000 results. While you can search for brands that you love, Amazon itself also offers a product line of Amazon Basics, which offers 46 products for the same search. In particular, we recommend the Amazon Basics Foldable Metal Platform Bed Frame with Tool Free Setup. The folding capability makes it easy to store away whenever necessary, while the vertical clearance of about 13 inches means you can store items underneath. While slim in construction, it can still handle weights of up to 250 pounds.

One drawback with this Amazon bed frame is that thinner mattresses won’t work well with it. But with close to 85,000 reviews and 84% of them being 5 out of 5 stars, we think this is a very solid purchase, especially at just $125 for a queen.

Anthropologie

Anthropologie bed
Anthropologie.
What We Like
  • Wide range of style options

  • Free shipping on orders over $50

  • In-store pickup available for some options

What We Don't Like
  • Limited sizing with some models

  • More expensive options

  • Not great for simple/understated bed frames

Since opening the doors of its first retail shop in 1992, Anthropologie has gone on to open 199 more across the world. The brand identifies itself as a space that caters to “creative people, who want to be and look like themselves,” and it has certainly been successful in fulfilling this definition. While many people shop there for clothing, Anthropologie also features great home decor and furniture. Today, you can go to one of the brand’s approximate 200 retail locations or order directly from the company’s website.

On Anthropologie’s website, there are currently 78 beds, bed frames, and headboards, all ranging in style from boho chic to more classically ornate to midcentury modern. In particular, we really like one of its bestsellers, the Hemming Bed, a sleek, modern, and minimalist product. Antique brass hardware and oak veneer combine to make it a very elegant choice that lets the subtlety do all of the speaking, while engineered wood and a clear lacquer seal ensure that it’s built to maintain its look and withstand time.

One drawback, however, with the Hemming Bed is that it is limited in the sizing, as it’s offered only in queen and king (sorry to our friends in the twin category). But free shipping and 4.3 out of 5 stars make this well worth it in our books, and customers love it for its look and durability, noting that it is a frame that is built to last.

What We Like
  • Durable materials

What We Don't Like
  • Limited options

  • Not much range in prices

  • One-year manufacturer’s warranty

Article has been focused on creating stylish, long-lasting furniture since 2013. In that time the company has established itself as a powerhouse in making contemporary, modern, and midcentury furniture. Today, you can purchase Article furniture from the company’s website.

With 15 bed frame options, Article has less of a selection than many other brands on our list, but each of the 15 choices is great in its own regard. In particular, The Lenia is a great midcentury addition for a bedroom. It features concealed joinery for a clean finish and is built from solid and veneered American black walnut or American white oak for a finish that is both gorgeous and durable.

While it does come in two different color options, The Lenia is limited in size choices, coming in only queen and king. That being said, it still boasts a 5-stars-out-of-5 rating on the company’s website for everything from its convenient delivery to its durable build.

Pottery Barn

What We Like
  • Plenty of styles

  • White glove delivery options

  • Focus on sustainability

What We Don't Like
  • Limited sizing with certain styles

  • Limited color options

If you’re looking for a reputable furniture brand that has withstood the test of time, it’s hard to beat Pottery Barn. Since its inception in 1949, the brand has gone on to become a name associated with high-quality products that look great in any space. Today, you can purchase Pottery Barn’s products on its website as well as at one of its 100+ retailers in the United States.

Pottery Barn features a wide range of bed frames and headboards, with over 208 being offered on the company’s site. Among the company’s more traditional-looking furniture, there is certainly eclecticism to be found with frames such as the Camino Upholstered Platform Bed. With an iron-welded frame and 100% polyester fabric upholstery, plus straps on the headboard in place, it’s a great-looking piece that is sure to garner a lot of positive attention.

One drawback with this bed frame, as well as others at Pottery Barn, is the price tag. However, it’s important to note that you get what you pay for with a brand like this, as it offers white glove delivery as well as beds that are made with highly durable materials.

What We Like
  • Free shipping on many items

  • Wide range of styles

  • Wide range of prices

  • Trial period on many of the bed frames

What We Don't Like
  • Assembly costs extra

  • Some furniture not available in stores

Walmart first opened its doors in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, in the hopes of helping people to save money. In that time it has become multinational and one of the biggest online retailers. Selling everything from patio furniture to car batteries to groceries, odds are if you need it, Walmart has it. Today you can visit 10,586 Walmarts in 24 countries and of course shop online at the company’s website.

Much like Amazon and Target, Walmart also sells other brands as well as a handful of its own. Searching for bed frames on the site yields over 1,000 results. One Walmart brand in particular, Mainstays, has eight different affordably priced options, all with 4 or more stars out of 5 in ratings. We like the Mainstays 14" Heavy Duty Steel Slat Queen Platform Bed Frame for its super reasonable price ($100 for a queen) and its durable materials to make sure it lasts you quite some time.

One drawback of purchasing this bed frame is that it comes in only one color, white. However, with close to 2,300 reviews and still boasting a 4.3-stars-out-of-5 rating, plus a weight limit of up to 1,200 pounds on a queen, we know that this is a great deal.

Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters bed
Urban Outfitters.
What We Like
  • Free shipping over $75

  • Wide range of bed frames

  • Wide range of price points

What We Don't Like
  • Does not offer assembly

  • Some sizes go out of stock for quite a while

Founded in 1970, Urban Outfitters has been offering up chic and trendy options ever since. While known by many as a clothier for both men and women, Urban Outfitters also has a very popular Home section where there’s no shortage of stylish choices to keep your home or apartment looking great. Today, there are over 200 retail locations in the United States and Canada to shop in; though, of course, you can also order from the company’s retail website.

On its website, Urban Outfitters features 47 beds and headboards that are wide ranging in style.  From the clean upholstered look of the Riley Performance Linen Platform Bed to the more functional and practical design of the Wade Storage Bed, there is truly something for everyone at Urban Outfitters. In particular, the Bohemian Platform Bed is a great option for someone looking to complete their boho space in a minimalist way. Carved from sustainable mango wood and with slats included, no box spring is needed for your mattress. Plus, with the choice between a more natural or whitewashed finish, you’re sure to find the perfect missing piece for your bedroom.

One drawback with this particular bed frame from Urban Outfitters is that it is limited in sizing and at the time of this publishing, it is out of stock in queen size. However, with a 4-stars-out-of-5 rating and 80% of customers recommending it, we think it’s a great option.

Apt2B

Apt2B bed display on carpet
Apt2B.
What We Like
  • High-quality materials

  • Free delivery

  • Hassle-free 100-day return policy

What We Don't Like
  • Can take long to ship

  • No super-affordable options

Started in 2010 in an attempt to find the bridge between affordability and great style, Apt2B hasn’t disappointed. The LA-based brand now sells a wide array of styles, ranging from midcentury modern to what the brand calls “transitional, glam, industrial and Scandifornian-style pieces,” which will give you a chance to really mix up your looks when one arrives. Today you can purchase its products exclusively from the company’s website.

In particular, we love the Bostwick Platform Storage Bed for its sleek midcentury clean lines, its solid and veneer acacia wood construction, and the open storage compartment in the footboard. It also doesn’t hurt that it comes equipped with wooden slats so that you don’t need to purchase a box spring. Carroll tells us, “You can buy a fancy mattress, but if the right structure doesn’t hold it, it will not provide you with the support your spine, hips, or back require for healthy sleep." We recommend the Bostwick Platform Storage Bed because its durability offers that necessary structure.

One drawback with Apt2B is that there is not much range in the prices. Most of the available bed frames come in at over $1,500. But that being said, the prices don’t seem to be deal breakers because customers love the bed frames for their quality and long-lasting builds.

Ikea

IKEA bed

IKEA

What We Like
  • Wide range of bed frame styles and options

  • Can pick up at Ikea stores

  • Very affordable options

What We Don't Like
  • Assembly can be tedious

  • Receipt needed for return

If you’ve ever decorated a new space, odds are you’ve shopped at or purchased something from Ikea. And with good reason, because the Swedish furniture powerhouse has been making household goods since 1943. Today, the Scandinavian-inspired furniture brand refers to itself as “straight-forward, innovative, creative and common-sense problem-solvers.” Its furniture can be bought at one of its 460 Ikea stores globally or online at its website

At the time of publish, there are 868 options for beds and headboards on Ikea’s website—chances are, you’ll be sure to find something that completes your space. With beds designed for storage like the Brimnes, to the powder-coated steel Sagstua, you’ll enjoy the wide-ranging styles. In particular, we love the bestseller Malm for its adjustable bed sides that allow you to adjust for mattress thickness, as well as its high headboard for late-night reading. Plus, priced at under $300 for a queen, it's hard to beat the Malm’s overall value.

One drawback with this bed frame, as well as other Ikea bed frames, is that it can be tedious to build. However, some people actually enjoy this aspect, and for a DIYer, this is the next best thing. Additionally, the ease of being able to go in and pick up most of these frames from a local Ikea coupled with the very reasonable prices has made the retailer a staple.

Target

Target Tufted Velvet Upholstered Wingback Bed displayed in a bedroom setting next to an end table

Target

What We Like
  • In-store pickup availability for many products

  • No shortage of retail locations

  • Wide array of options both Target brand and otherwise

  • Plenty of price choices

What We Don't Like
  • Not every item is available in stores

  • Assembly not included in the price (costs extra)

Since the opening of four stores in Minnesota in 1962, Target has earned itself a spot in American minds as a go-to for much of their shopping. In addition to groceries and household necessities, Target also sells everything from clothing to electronics (and pretty much anything else you can imagine!). Aside from the company’s 1,948 stores across America, the company has a robust online presence that offers quick shipping on many items as well as an option to order and go pick up in the store at your own convenience.

Searching for bed frames on Target’s website yields over 2,300 products. Many of these are brands that you can also expect to find on sites like Amazon, while others, like Threshold, are Target owned. When searching for Target-specific beds, the search narrows down to 79 items, which is still nothing to scoff at. We really love the Tufted Velvet Upholstered Wingback Bed by Threshold. With 16 color options, an upholstered and elegant design as well as a pine and metal build for durability, this bed is a home run.

One drawback with this bed, however, is that it requires a box spring, which is another added inconvenience to have to purchase if you don’t have one. However, if you are already a box spring owner, then enjoy the bed that boasts a 4.7-stars-out-of-5 rating.

Thuma

Thuma The Bed

Thuma

What We Like
  • Greenguard Gold Certified

  • Lifetime warranty

  • Easy to assemble and disassemble

What We Don't Like
  • Pricier option

  • Only one bed frame

Since Thuma’s founding in 2018, the company has sought to make products that are environmentally friendly and designed with intention. The brand is looking to crack down on the waste that results from constructing wooden bed frames, working with One Tree Planted to plant one tree for every bed made.

And while Thuma currently sells only one bed frame, it’s a pretty renowned one. Thuma’s The Bed finds itself at the wonderful intersection of simplicity and quality, with Japanese joinery that makes for easy assembly (and disassembly, when it comes time to move). Made of repurposed wood, the bed frame comes in six different sizes. With close to 13,000 reviews and a total 4.9-stars-out-of-five rating, it’s safe to say that The Bed is a hit.

One drawback with Thuma is that it only manufactures one bed frame. But while it may only be one bed, it is important to note that there are a few chances to customize it. Three distinct color options (walnut, natural, and espresso) as well as the choice between a pillow board or headboard ensures that you’re getting something tailored to your own style and needs.

What to Look for in a Bed Frame

Popular types

Bed frames come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Some popular ones right now are simple metal frames that are minimalist both in design and space occupation as well as midcentury bed frames that use materials like wood and focus on clean and simple lines. Another popular feature offered by many brands is a pillow board—as opposed to a wooden headboard. This offers you a place to comfortably sit up and lean against to watch TV or read at night before catching some z's. For an awesome pillow board, we recommend The Bed by Thuma. While it also offers a sleek headboard option, the pillow board is made with CertiPUR-US certified foam for supreme comfort, with a sleek, low-profile design.

Sizes

Most bed frames will accommodate twin, full, queen, and king-sized mattresses. While some manufacturers offer other specialty sizes like twin XL or California king, other brands don’t. If you’re in the market for a new frame, you want to make sure that it can accommodate your current mattress size. Additionally, you’ll want to know for sure that your mattress is standard and so is the bed frame, as you will avoid the frustration of one being a slightly different size.

It’s important to note, your bed size should complement your room, so if you don’t have space for something super bulky, we highly recommend the Amazon Basics Foldable Metal Platform Bed Frame with Tool Free Setup. It's no-frills and has a smaller footprint, which is perfect for not taking up any extra space than the mattress already does.

Material

Much like clothing, there are many different materials that bed frames can be made out of. From metal to wood, if your bedroom has a particular vibe, you can certainly find a plethora of beds to accommodate it. Some of it will come down to personal preference, for example Ramchandani tells us that she prefers “upholstered beds to non-upholstered/wood or metal beds” because she finds them to be “softer and more inviting.” If you are looking for a great upholstered bed, we recommend the Camerano Eggshell Upholstered Queen Bed from CB2. The Crypton performance fabric is soft and also stain-resistant.

Comfort

As Carroll tells us, “We humans spend about one-third of our lives in bed. Our bodies need sleep to recover from the day, rebuild cells, detoxify, and rest.” With this in mind, it’s imperative to make sure that your bed frame is comfortable. Comfort can mean a few different things, but mainly, you’ll want a bed frame that allows the mattress you’ve spent good money on to do its job.

Comfort can also mean that your bed frame doesn’t hurt you in the middle of the night. If you live in a smaller space and bump into your bed during the night, we would recommend something with more padding such as Pottery Barn’s Camino Upholstered Platform Bed.

Design

One of the most individual aspects of a bed frame is going to be its design. That will come down to your personal preferences and style. For continuity purposes, make sure that your bed frame matches the style of the rest of the room. If you have a more classical dresser, you’ll want a more classical bed frame. Similarly, if you are going with a midcentury look in your space, consider a bed frame like Article’s Lenia Panel White Oak Queen Bed. With tapered legs and a no-frills silhouette, this bed frame is a wonderful addition to any midcentury modern bedroom.

FAQ
  • What is the most popular bed size?

According to Klein, queen is the most popular bed size. Due to their overall space, queen-sized beds are a great option for couples, because according to Carroll, “having enough space to move and get away from the other person’s body heat is very important” for a good night of sleep. Queens are also great choices for taller sleepers thanks to an extra 4 inches of length when compared to a full.

  • What type of material is the best for a bed?

The material that you choose for your bed will come down mainly to personal preference and your own sense of style. While durability may play a factor in what you choose to have your bed made out of, other factors such as what catches your eye will be important. For example, Ramchandani tells us that she prefers “fully upholstered beds, with a surround instead of a metal frame.” Conversely, Klein prefers a bed frame that is easy to maintain and tells us she likes “anything leather or velvet” because they are “easy to clean.”

  • How can you tell if a bed frame is good quality?

Oftentimes the quality of a bed frame will come down to the attention to the finer details. As Ramchandani tells us, “For quality, I look at the hardware and joinery. I also look at the sturdiness of the metal.” Klein tells us that she looks for “style, quality, and durability” in a bed frame. We recommend reading the reviews of products before purchasing them. Oftentimes websites will feature ratings specific to things like durability, which can be integral to deciding how much you are willing to invest in a new bed frame.
