Editor's Note (September 2023): This product review was originally written and published in 2023. To make sure we are still recommending the best products for your needs, we recently reviewed this story to make sure it is still accurate and that we stand by what we wrote. In addition to this original hands-on review, we also had the opportunity to test this product in The Lab. Thanks to its at-home and lab performance, it is still a top choice in The Best Cooling Pillows despite newer models and options being available on the market.

As a hot sleeper, there is nothing better to me than curling up in a thick, warm comforter in the winter with a slight chill coming through the window. However, everything changes when the temperature begins to rise, and I struggle to sleep comfortably without overheating or waking up in a sweat during the summer months. I never expected a pillow to make such a difference in my summer sleep routine, but the Casper Hybrid Pillow with Snow Technology surprised me.

During my time as a commerce editor, I've researched dozens of cooling pillows that claim to help you sleep better and stay cool. When I heard about Casper's newest pillow with cooling technology and mysterious buzzwords about 12 hours of cool sleep, I was intrigued.

How Does the Casper Hybrid Pillow with Snow Technology Work?

According to Casper's website, the hybrid pillow features a CoolTouch Cover with HeatDelete Bands to prevent overheating during the night. Basically, that means the cover always feels cool to the touch, while the bands are designed to pull heat away from your head and neck for 12 hours. Made from fiber with a foam layer, the pillow is meant to be extremely supportive without flattening over time. The pillow's cover features nylon, spandex, and polyester, and it's filled with 100 percent polyurethane foam and 100 percent recycled PET Blowfill. PET is a form of polyester that contains no phthalates, BPA, or endocrine disruptors.

What Makes the Casper Hybrid Pillow with Snow Technology So Great?

From the moment I laid my head on this pillow, I could feel its refreshing coolness. Having a pillow that provides the cooling sensation of the "other side of the pillow" all around is a novel sensation for me. The foam is incredibly soft, similar to a bean bag chair that conforms to your body when you sit on it. The porous texture helps with cooling, as air flows through the empty spaces and stays cold through the night. It even feels cold through a silk pillowcase. The pillow not only has effective cooling technology but also provides a desirable balance between support and softness. As someone who prefers firmer pillows, I was pleasantly surprised by the comfortable cushioning that retained its shape for extended periods of time.

Quality

Casper’s packaging left an impact on me with its straightforward design and secure wrapping. The pillow was tightly double-wrapped, but it was immediately ready to sleep on when I opened it. The pillow felt thick and almost heavy in a way that ensures me it is made with high-quality materials and won't easily become damaged over time. It's much heavier than my current pillow, the Slumber Cloud Core Down Alternative Pillow. The Slumber Cloud is softer than the Casper pillow, but I didn't miss the extra cushion during my time testing. Despite the heaviness, it was effortless to place into my normal pillowcase, and it unfurled from the packaging quickly, requiring no extra time to adjust before using it. One thing to note is that the pillow is a light blue color. It was slightly noticeable when I used it with my white pillowcase, which wasn't my preference. However, I still think it's worth it because of the cooling properties it provides.

Breathability

This pillow could not be more breathable. It's extremely cool to the touch, even after hours of sleep. After 24 hours, I can quickly identify which pillow is the Casper pillow in a sea of white pillows sitting on my bed because of how cool it feels. I didn't feel any warmth or sweat on my head and neck during the night. I even tried to find a warm spot on my pillow, but I couldn't.

Support

I prefer a pillow that provides both cushioning and support, without making me feel as though my head is being swallowed and leaving my neck unsupported. This pillow feels similar in shape and thickness to my personalized Pluto Pillow. As a stomach and side sleeper, it keeps its shape impeccably, which provides ample support for my head and neck. Although it may seem firm, the pillow was never stiff or uncomfortable during testing. As a result, I plan to make it a permanent part of my nightly routine moving forward.

Durability

After four nights of sleep, the pillow still feels solid and sturdy. Overall, this pillow maintains its shape better than any other pillow I've tested. I love that the pillow cover is washable, too, making it effortless to clean when needed, typically twice a year.

Is It Worth the Money?

I have a confession to make. I used the same pillow for my entire life until I was 23 years old and moved out of my parent's home for the second time. After starting this job and researching products for a living, I realized what I was missing. I never considered that I could find a pillow that perfectly fits my needs as a combination sleeper who overheats during the night. After months of research, I discovered just how many pillows are on the market and how a cooling pillow could benefit my sleep and my life.

This pillow may seem a bit pricey at $149, but trust me, it's a wise investment—especially if you’re a hot sleeper or you reside in a hot climate all year round. The cost of pillows can vary greatly, with prices ranging from $25 to $165. Specifically, memory foam pillows can be found within the price range of $31 to $107. Therefore, I think the price is quite reasonable.

To buy: $149, amazon.com

Final Verdict

Every time I touch this pillow, I am surprised by how cool it feels. I love the cooling features and the support it delivers. While it's definitely expensive, I believe it is worth the investment for people who live in warm climates year-round. I am excited to keep using this pillow to see how it performs long-term.
