What You'll Need

Equipment / Tools

  • 1 Scissors
  • 1 3.5mm Crochet Hook
  • Sewing Needle

Materials

  • 2 Yarn (various colors)
  • Stitch Markers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a Slip-Knot

    Every crochet project begins with a simple slip-knot. You can make a slip-knot in various ways, so pick the method that is the easiest and most comfortable for you.

  2. Insert the Hook

    Whether you make your slip-knot using the hook initially or make the slip-knot itself first, make sure your the slip-knot is securely attached to your crochet hook.

  3. Begin Chaining

    For this pattern, you will need to begin chaining six.

  4. Insert Hook Into Chain

    Once you have your six chains, take your hook and insert it into the first chain of the six. After, you will need to pull the yarn through the two loops that are created to make a slip-stitch.

  5. Chain Three

    Once you have completed the previous step, you should be seeing somewhat of a circular pattern. The circle will be used to make the remaining coaster. Chain three more.

  6. Make Double Stitches

    Next, you will need to crochet 19 double stitches all around the circular center to give the coaster the outer shape.

  7. Close It Off

    Once you've completed your 19 double stitches, you should have your first circle. Make sure to close it off properly, so it stays secure when you move on to the next parts.

  8. Chain Three

    Chain three more to begin making your next layer. Once you've chained three, make two more double stitches, so they're neighboring one another.

  9. Chain Two and Two Doubles

    Keep chaining two and then two double stitches until you've made it around the whole pattern. You should start seeing a pattern forming. Once you've made it around, make sure to close it off securely once again.

  10. Chain Three

    Once again, chain three so you can begin your third layer of the pattern.

  11. Chain Two and Two Doubles

    Going through the first loop, begin chaining two and then two doubles again. However, make sure to not chain through every other time and go straight into the two doubles. This will create a contrasting pattern with the previous second layer you completed, giving it a more detailed appearance. Make sure to close it off to finish off the layer.

  12. Chain Three

    Chain three to begin the last layer of your coaster which will be a scalloped edge to give your coaster a clean, finished look.

  13. Insert the Hook Into the Chain Two

    Take your hook and insert it into chain two right next to it and pull your yarn back out of the loops.

  14. Create Six Doubles

    Make six doubles in the yarn over to begin creating the first scalloped edge. To finish off the first scalloped edge, insert the hook into the chain two spaces to close it off.

  15. Continue the Six Doubles

    Continue doing the six doubles and closing it off each time until you get around the whole pattern. You should be able to see the separate scalloped flaps forming and shaping the coaster.

  16. Closing It

    As you went around and created your scalloped flaps, close it off by making five doubles in the last remaining chain three stitch. Once you have put the hook through and it's secured, take a pair of scissors and cut the remaining yarn off.

  17. Tie a Knot

    With the small piece of yarn hanging out, attach it to a sewing needle and weave it into your coaster. Weaving the remaining yarn piece will keep it secured and sturdy, so it doesn't fall out.
