Editor's Note (September 2023): This product review was originally written and published in 2019. To make sure we are still recommending the best products for your needs, we recently reviewed this story to make sure it is still accurate and that we stand by what we wrote. Despite newer models and options being available, we still feel confident that this product is one of the best choices, and therefore have included it in The Best Grout Cleaners and The Best Bathroom Cleaners.

Grout is like a reputation—we’ve all got it, and nobody wants to see it stained. In order to keep up appearances, kitchen and bathroom grout require regular and meticulous attention. We searched out some of the top-rated grout cleaners on the market and tested them to see which were up for a challenge and which left something to be desired. We tested for effectiveness, safety, and ease of use, and in the end, found that shower scrubbing needn’t be the unconquerable titan of your chore list. Read on to see how Grout-EEZ Super Heavy-Duty Grout Cleaner performed in our tiled shower.

Performance: As promised

In order to use Grout-EEZ Super Heavy-Duty Grout Cleaner to its full potential, we first needed to pick up a grout brush. Once that was handled, we simply used the nozzle to apply the liquid formula directly to our shower’s grout, and then let it soak for five minutes, as directed by the manufacturer.

After just one pass, all of the rust-colored stains were easily lifted and the tiles looked almost like they did when we first moved in.

When we came back to the bathroom after adequate time had passed, we were ready to attack the walls with our brush (you can use any brush with relatively stiff bristles—FYI). Fortunately, attacking wasn’t necessary. With light-handed brush strokes, grime pilled-up and dispersed down the wall. Because there is a substantial amount of surface area in our shower, we can’t say that our arms didn’t fatigue with scrubbing, but after just one pass, all of the rust-colored stains were easily lifted and the tiles looked almost like they did when we first moved in.

Once all of the debris was successfully scrubbed loose, the bottle advises you to rinse the tiles. We added one extra step, running a sponge over our walls to remove any remaining residue. After a second round of agitating and rinsing, we found that nearly every inch of grout looked cleaner and brighter than it had just hours before. While it wasn’t a glamorous job, it was surprisingly satisfying—even better than peeling off the last of a gel manicure. From start to finish, the process was relatively quick and painless, taking us just 30 minutes.

Warning

This product is only designed to work on ceramic and porcelain tiles—it will wreak havoc if you attempt to use it on natural stone. The Amazon description reads “Not for use on any natural stone” in all caps and is punctuated with three exclamation points, so we know they’re not messing around!!!

Bottle Design: Ideal for floors, not walls

Grout-EEZ’s bottle isn’t exactly designed for wall grout, but that is really our only gripe with the product. The design features a nozzle, as opposed to the spray top commonly found on competitors. On floor grout, this design feature allows for more meticulous application and leads to less wasted product. When using Grout-EEZ on our bathroom walls, however, we had to apply a generous portion to ensure the entirety of our grout was coated. If you have an extra spray nozzle lying around, replacing the nozzle yourself could remedy the situation.

Grout-EEZ’s bottle isn’t exactly designed for wall grout, but that is really our only gripe with the product.

Safety: Take necessary precautions

As stated on the back of the bottle, you should be wearing protective eye gear as well as cleaning gloves when you use this product. Grout-EEZ contains urea monohydrochloride and nonylphenol ethoxylates—AKA a powerful acid and a commercial detergent—as active ingredients, so if the solution were to get in your eyes it could cause serious damage. Don’t worry too much, though, as you’re totally safe if you follow instructions and avoid contact with your skin. If the cleaner does happen to make it into your eyes, the makers advise you to rinse for several minutes before calling a poison control center. On the same note, Grout-EEZ’s fumes are relatively strong. It’s definitely best to keep a door open and crack any nearby windows.

Price: Middle of the Road

At roughly $20, Grout-EEZ Super Heavy Duty Grout Cleaner isn’t the most expensive nor the least expensive option out there. You can certainly find some products for less (around $10), but the product’s professional-grade formula makes it worth the price.

Competition: Among the best

As we noted, Grout-EEZ is a pretty inexpensive but competent cleaner. One competitor, which we think does a comparable job, is Black Diamond’s Ultimate Grout Cleaner. The main benefit of the $10 grout cleaner is its acid-free formula, which is safer on skin and gentle enough for use on marble surfaces. Without acid, however, it’s incapable of eliminating water spots and calcium buildup. Both products yielded excellent results in our bathroom, so the decision is up to you.

Final Verdict

Yes, buy it for floor grout.

If you’ve been staring wearily at your discolored grout for weeks, intimidated by the prospect of scrubbing until your arms are sore, fret no longer. Grout-EEZ Super Heavy Duty Grout Cleaner lets you remove stains, grime, and buildup quickly and easily.
