We purchased the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Cordless Upright Vacuum so our writer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

Cordless vacuums are lighter and less cumbersome than full upright or canister vacuums, making them perfect for smaller jobs and spot cleanings. The downside to cordless models is they aren’t typically as powerful as their full-size counterparts, but there are some exceptions. Hoover says its ONEPWR Evolve can pick up dirt and pet hair as well as a full-size vacuum. Since it’s specifically designed to eliminate pet hair, I put this vacuum to the test in a household with two dogs. Read on to see how well it performed.

This model weighs 8 pounds—on the heavier side for a cordless vacuum—it still beats lugging around a full-size upright. This vacuum has a nice turning radius, and its wheels glide smoothly over hardwood floors and carpets.

I was thrilled to discover that this vacuum comes with two rechargeable batteries for double the longevity.

For optimal maneuverability, the handle can recline to an almost entirely horizontal position. However, I still couldn’t get under everything. The hose, located right above the floor nozzle, prevents the vacuum from going under low furniture. I was disappointed that I couldn't vacuum beneath my bed, living room couches, or any other furniture lower to the floor.

This vacuum's suction power was stellar. It quickly picked up dog food and cereal that had spilled on my hardwood kitchen floor. My living room carpet sees a lot of activity. After one pass with the Hoover, any visible dirt, crumbs, and small debris were gone. The ultimate test was the high-traffic rug in my entryway, which collects many leaves, ground-in dirt from shoes, and embedded pet hair. The ONEPWR Evolve was powerful enough to remove the debris with a few swipes. Unlike other cordless vacuums, which often struggle on high-pile carpets, the Hoover maintained its powerful suction on all floor types.

I was thrilled to discover that this vacuum comes with two rechargeable batteries for double the longevity. My biggest complaint with other cordless vacuums is that they have a short run time. When the battery dies, I often have to stop cleaning right in the middle of a job. The Hoover ONEPWR Evolve is the exception. As long as I keep a backup battery ready, I can swap them out and have plenty of extra cleaning time. Each battery lasts up to 35 minutes per charge. There are lights on the battery pack to indicate how much power is left. Once the battery is exhausted, it can take three to four hours to recharge fully.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the assembly process?

I’ve tested other cordless vacuum brands, and this model was the easiest to assemble by far. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I attached the handle and inserted the battery in the port. Both parts click into place. The vacuum was assembled in less than two minutes. I fully charged the battery for about three hours before my first use, as recommended by the manufacturer.

Does this vacuum have any noteworthy features?

I like the convenience of the battery system. I didn't have to plug the whole vacuum into an outlet; the removable batteries are charged in a separate port. The vacuum can stand on its own in its full upright position. It is easy to store, and I don’t have to prop it against furniture as I’m cleaning or worry about it tipping over. The vacuum is bagless and has a generously sized dirt cup, which is easy to empty. I can vacuum my whole house without having to empty the canister.

Is it effective on pet hair?

I have two small dogs—both Maltese. Although they don’t shed very much, I still find my fair share of pet hair around the house. It’s particularly noticeable on darker rugs and carpets. The vacuum did a great job of picking up stubborn pet hair, even hair trapped deep within the carpet fibers.

Does the vacuum come with any attachments?

Considering the fairly steep price tag, I was surprised the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve didn’t come with any tools or accessories. Other cordless vacuums include special attachments for upholstery; some even convert into handheld vacuums for more versatility. However, this vacuum only operates in one configuration, so you won’t be able to tackle anything aside from floors.

Is this vacuum worth buying?

If you’re looking for a cordless vacuum strictly for floor cleaning, the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve is a solid choice. It’s effective on stubborn pet hair, and it comes with two rechargeable batteries, giving it more than double the run time of other cordless vacuums. If you prefer a vacuum that can also clean upholstery, I would suggest buying a more versatile model.

Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Cordless Upright Vacuum vs. the Competition

Retailing for about $160, the MOOSOO Cordless Vacuum costs significantly less than the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve. It’s not as powerful or as effective on pet hair, but it’s more versatile. This model converts from a stick into a handheld vacuum. The Hoover is limited to floor cleaning, while the MOOSOO has two helpful attachments—a crevice nozzle and an oval brush—to clean upholstery and other furnishings. With a limited run time of up to 30 minutes—it has one battery and lasts half as long as the Hoover. The MOOSOO is best suited for smaller homes.

The Shark Freestyle Pro Cordless Vacuum is a no-frills cordless vacuum that’s equally powerful on hardwood floors and carpets. Retailing between $150 and $200, it’s more affordably priced than the Hoover. When it comes to tackling ground-in dirt and pet hair, its performance is on par with the ONEPWR Evolve. The biggest difference between these two vacuums is the run time. Since it doesn’t come with an extra battery, the Shark Freestyle Pro is only 17 minutes. Like the Hoover, it doesn’t include any extra tools or accessories; it’s strictly for floor cleaning.

Final Verdict

A pricey but powerful vacuum.

The Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Cordless Upright Vacuum delivers powerful suction but is limited to floor-cleaning. I missed having attachments to justify its high price tag. It delivers superb performance on all types of floors, tackles pet hair, and has exceptional battery life. These perks give it an edge over the competition.
