Puffer jackets provide lots of warmth with little weight, making them a great jacket for travel, backpacking, and everyday wear. They've exploded in popularity too, making them easy to find across brands and stores. But washing puffer jackets is a bit different than washing your ordinary cotton or fleece jacket, thanks to their down or polyester filling and the coatings that are often found on the surface. Here's how to wash a puffer jacket, and what you need to keep in mind.

How Often to Wash Puffer Jackets

Assuming it's been made well, you shouldn't need to wash your puffer jacket very often. In fact, you don't want to, as frequent washing can threaten the integrity of your jacket's filling and any waterproof coating it has on its surface. Instead, wash it at the end of each season, before you put it away for the year. However, if you wear your puffer jacket practically every day, you can consider giving it a mid-season wash. Likewise, if a large spill or stain occurs, wash it immediately.

How to Wash a Puffer Jacket

  1. Prepare Your Jacket

Before your puffer jacket heads into the washing machine, empty the pockets and zip the front zipper all the way up. This will prevent the zippers from snagging on anything in the machine and help the jacket keep its shape. Then, read the care tag on your jacket to see what type of material the filling is made out of. Most fillings are either down or synthetic polyester.

  2. Add the Jacket to the Washing Machine

Next, place the puffer jacket in the washing machine. If your jacket is quite small, place a clean towel or two alongside it to prevent the washer tub from becoming off-balance. If your jacket has a synthetic polyester filling, add the appropriate amount of gentle detergent to the machine.

If you have a down jacket, use a down-specific detergent, like Nikwax's Down Wash Direct or Rivevex's Down Cleaner, if possible. Puffer jackets have fillings and coatings that are sensitive to harsh soaps and chemicals, so it's important to use the right laundry detergent.

  3. Run the Washing Machine on a Delicate Cycle

Once you've added your jacket and detergent, select the delicate or wool cycle on your washing machine. Heavy agitation or spinning can damage your jacket's filling. If your machine has an option to add an extra rinse to the end of the wash cycle, select it. This will ensure no soap or detergent residue is left behind in or on the jacket.

  4. Air Dry Your Jacket

Once the wash cycle has run its course, remove your jacket from the washing machine—it will probably still be quite wet. Lay your jacket across the flat surface of your drying rack and let it air-dry. It may take a while.

Check on your jacket every few hours and smooth out any clumps in the filling that develop as it dries. Once the jacket has completely dried, you're good to wear it.

FAQ
  • How do you fluff a puffer jacket after washing it?

If your puffer jacket has lost some of its fluff after washing and air-drying, place it in the dryer on an air-dry cycle (no heat) for five minutes along with some dryer balls or tennis balls. The balls will gently agitate your jacket's filling and restore its fluff.

  • Should I zip up a puffer jacket before washing?

Yes. An unzipped puffer jacket can snag itself or the machine during a wash cycle, causing rips and tears. It can also get misshapen as it gets tossed around the machine unzipped. Therefore, make sure you zip your puffer jacket all the way up before washing.

  • How do you wash a puffer jacket without it going flat?

If your jacket looks flat after coming out of the washing machine, don't stress. It needs to fully dry before its fluffiness comes back. Let it air-dry completely, then shake it out to restore its fluff. If it still needs some TLC, place the puffer jacket in the dryer for five minutes on an air-dry (no heat) cycle with a few dryer balls.
