What made you decide that being a designer was your calling?

Growing up with a dad who's a general contractor, I was constantly immersed in the world of construction and design. I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of creating beautiful spaces and I developed a deep passion for enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of homes. This ultimately drove me to become an interior designer, as I wanted to channel my expertise into helping people truly fall in love with their living spaces.

How would you describe your style and approach to designing spaces?

My style is transitional, blending elements of traditional and modern design. I aim for an elevated yet approachable aesthetic, creating spaces that feel both sophisticated and welcoming. My focus is on making attainable designs that resonate with clients' lifestyles and preferences.

Do you have any design inspiration, whether it be from your culture, other cultures, or anything else in between?

My design inspiration comes from a wide array of different eras and cultures, influencing everything from furniture choices to spatial arrangements. I find inspiration in everyday life–the way light filters through a window, the harmony of colors in a garden, or the ambiance of a cozy café. All these elements constantly fuel my creativity and guide me in crafting unique and captivating spaces.

What’s a design project that you’ve done that’s stuck with you throughout your career?

Throughout my career, it's not a particular project that has stuck with me, but rather the recurring theme of helping people realize that elevating their homes doesn't require breaking the bank. I've consistently focused on guiding clients to see the potential in their existing spaces and how small design tweaks can make a significant impact. It's crucial for all of us to recognize that creating a space we love doesn't always demand a hefty budget; it's about approaching the importance of enhancing what we have and making it work harmoniously within our means.

What's your favorite design project?

My favorite design project to date has been crafting my own design studio. The process of curating a space that reflects my personal style and professional ethos has been truly special. It's been a remarkable journey to witness how this studio has blossomed into a space that not only inspires my creativity but also resonates with the essence of who I am as a designer.

As one of the few Black designers, I feel a responsibility to inspire younger generations and show them that they can thrive in this field too.

What does it mean to you to be Black in your industry?

Being Black in the design industry holds great significance for me, especially considering how low the percentage of Black designers is. The industry's lack of diversity makes it even more important to be a visible representation of change. As one of the few Black designers, I feel a responsibility to inspire younger generations and show them that they can thrive in this field too. Being part of this shift towards increased inclusivity is truly special, as it paves the way for more diverse voices and perspectives to shape the future of design.

What’s your favorite part of your own home?

My favorite part of my own home is the entirety of it, as it has been carefully designed to be a haven for my family. It's a place where we can disconnect from the outside world and create cherished memories. Our family space, in particular, holds a special place in my heart–I've curated it to be the perfect spot for watching movies, cooking together, playing games, and enjoying quality time.

What’s one thing you try to incorporate in every space you design?

One thing I strive to incorporate in every space I design is a unique moment that resonates with the individuals who will inhabit it. For instance, in a recent project, I learned that the family I was designing for had a tradition of stargazing on warm summer nights. In their living room, I designed a cozy reading nook with a skylight above, allowing them to stargaze from the comfort of their own space. These personalized elements not only make the design more meaningful but also leave a lasting impression of my commitment to creating spaces that reflect the essence of those who inhabit them.
