This Brownstone in Hudson, NY Is Wonderfully Warm and Welcoming

A commonly heard story over the last two years, many were motivated to move and relocate with changes in work and home life—and designer Nicole Fisher of BNR Interiors followed suit. She took her family and hightailed it to the countryside, a dream location to live for her.

"About two years ago, we made the decision to move upstate full-time," she explains. "We found Hudson to be a perfect combination of a small city with great restaurants and young families, along with nearby farms and outdoor space for our son to run around."

Now, Fisher shares her space with us, with a cozy and welcoming aesthetic that she describes as "lived-in eclectic."

The Victorian Brownstone of Her Dreams

The Victorian brownstone offers 3,800 square feet, and every inch is a dream for Fisher.

"It's my dream Brooklyn brownstone complete with original details, twelve-foot ceilings, and unique space," Fisher says.

Original 'Banged Up' Wood Floors

"We kept the original wood floors and just spruced them up," says Fisher of the home's flooring. "I love how banged up they are. I don't think twice to let my 2-year-old drive his trucks all over them!"

A Garden in the Country

"We have a small garden in the back of the house," Fisher explains. "We created a bluestone patio, added some flower beds, and sod."

A Perfectly Unexpected Bathroom

"My primary bathroom is my favorite room in the house," Fisher tells us. "I love how cozy and warm it is with the tile choices and wallpaper. You often see bright white bathrooms, but I love how different this makes you feel."

An Intentionally Unconventional Kitchen

"The goal for the kitchen was to make it totally opposite from a traditional kitchen," says Fisher. "You almost don't realize it's a kitchen when you walk in, but rather another room. I have no upper cabinets, no wall outlets (they're hidden in the countertops), and a glass front built-in bookcase we use to display our dishes and glasses. It's very unconventional, and I love that about it."

The kitchen also features Fisher's favorite element in the home.

"My favorite piece in the house is our Calcutta Viola Marble countertops," she says. "I was determined to find these and picking out the slab and where certain cuts will be was a highlight of the project."

Big Windows, Bright Lights, Perfect Views

"The sizes of the bedroom windows is my favorite feature," says Fisher. "They span up to the ceiling and give the rooms great expansive height."

The primary bedroom's windows also offer the best view. "The bay windows have the best view. They're three stories up, with views of the Catskill mountains in the winter and straight down our main downtown strip."

It's not just the bedroom window views, either. "We fell in love with the size of the windows in the house," Fisher says. "They are honestly some of the biggest windows I've ever seen. The new kitchen window even had to shrink down from eight feet tall because it got in the way of our new cabinetry. Our new custom-sized window is 4'x6', overlooking the back patio."

Special Plans for the Future

"We have a small workout room we're transitioning to another walk-in closet," says Fisher. "And we will be redoing the basement to house the gym. We have an open playroom for my son that has an adjoining TV space guests can close off. A multi-use space and very functional."
