Peek Inside Designer Stephanie Lindsey’s Eclectic, Joyful Home

Location: St. George, Utah

Size: Lindsey and her husband purchased a lot and designed the 3,000-plus-square-foot home, taking an active role in everything from the floor plan to the finishes, Lindsey says. The home is all on one level, with five beds, three baths, one great room, one playroom, and a three-car garage.

Style

Lindsey describes the general aesthetic as “a hint of modern farmhouse,” and from design to execution, extensive research was key to her process. “I have always been that person that needs to LOVE something before I purchase it,” she says. This includes everything from the finishes to the furnishings to the art. “I love to use wallpaper, [but] not your grandma’s wallpaper—ours is modern and used with intention,” Lindsey says. “I love color and texture, layering, and pattern. Overall, our home is a transitional style with eclectic touches.”

Inspired by the ethos of her own design firm, Lindsey says that she wanted to create a home that inspires herself and her family every day. “Each room we design has its own personality, but we create a home that ultimately is cohesive,” she says.

Outdoor Space

Outside, the family has a pool, an in-ground trampoline, and a small covered patio. But Lindsey admits that this area was designed later in the process and says that, if she could do it again, they would change their approach. “Having a pool bathroom was an oversight on our part because we didn't build the pool initially, so we wish we had thought through landscaping and exterior details before we built the home,” she says.

The Wet Room

Of the three bathrooms, Lindsey says, “I absolutely love our wet room. We have three young children, ages five, two, and nine months, and it's easy to bathe our kids in the tub. They can splash, play, and have fun, and it all stays contained in the wet room, without having to fight with a shower curtain or a low tub deck. I also love to shower after soaking in the tub, so it's functional for me as well.” 

The walls are adorned with teal picket tile, and Lindsey tells us, “It's a design element that really creates a statement. I love color! So much of great design is about creating moments that draw your eye and leave a lasting impression.”

The Kitchen

The kitchen features an eye-catching brass inlay that Lindsey calls unique and unexpected. “I love the backsplash because in the kitchen, it's the 'wow' factor,” she says. “[I also love] something you don't see in photographs: the soft-close hardware. With little ones running around, I do not miss hearing cabinet doors or drawers slam shut.”

Other favorite features include the dark gray mixed with the stained walnut, the brass cabinet hardware, the farmhouse sink, and the touch-faucet. Lindsey also designed the kitchen with lots of storage.  

The Bedrooms

The primary bedroom featured a blue paneled wall with a sweet backstory. “The night before I was induced with our third child, my husband and I stayed up (not by my husband's choice) and created our bedroom blue paneled wall,” Lindsey says.

Additional DIY projects are seen throughout the home. “We also made our son's front-loader bed, and I painted the mural on his wall,” she says.

The Floors

The home features luxury vinyl planks throughout, which Lindsey says they chose because it’s waterproof and low-maintenance.

“I also wish I had created a feature in the dining room floor in tile, similar to what a geometric rug would look like, for the cleanability and ease of moving the chairs so an actual rug wouldn't be necessary,” she says.

The Windows

The home features many large windows and doors that connect the indoors and outdoors, says Lindsey. “When the pool is open, I love the view from our living room! It's calming and peaceful to see the blue water, and most of the time, it draws us right in,” she says.

For the same reason, she also loves the view from the primary bedroom: “[Our bedroom window] is quite large and has a direct view of the pool.”

The Dual-Purpose Laundry Room 

The laundry room doubles as a craft room, partially because “it has so much storage!” Lindsey also loves “the retro throwbacks, such as the black and white flooring and the pastel aqua cabinets.”

The room also features a particularly special piece. “My father taught me to weld, so we made the shelving unit in the laundry room together,” Lindsey says. “It houses family heirlooms, such as my grandfather's radio and my grandma's bread box. I loved my grandparent's home growing up; each room had a different pastel color (picture the 1950s), and my grandmother instilled in me a love for pastel aqua and pastel coral. It obviously shows in the laundry room.”

A Joyful Home

“There are so many things I love about our home,” Lindsey says. “We moved in two years ago, and I still walk in and say, ‘I LOVE OUR HOME!’ and I'm so grateful to be here. That's something we wish for everyone. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a home that gives them a sense of belonging, lets them feel complete, and gives them joy.”
