Softest Bed Sheets

The Spruce / David Hattan

Sinking into a bed covered in supremely soft sheets is both a great comfort and a relief come bedtime. Creating a cozy, comfortable bed can help you drift off to sleep at night—and whether it’s a warm summer evening or a chilly winter night, that softness can play a role in getting some good rest. Cotton tends to be the staple material used to create the softest bed sheets, and cotton sheet sets made with extra-long fibers create particularly silky final products.

To find truly soft sheets, we tried and tested a selection of sheet sets in The Lab, putting products made from a variety of materials to the test with washing, wear, and even staining. We also used these sheet sets in real-world settings, where we put each sheet set through its paces at home for one to three months so we could determine how it performed in everyday situations. • Comfortably soft

  • American-grown Supima cotton

  • Wash and wear well

  • Deep 16-inch pockets

What We Don’t Like
  • Not particularly cooling

Soft and smooth in their feel and hardy enough to handle daily sleep, snuggles, and so much more, the 300 Thread Count Premium Supima Cotton Percale Sheet Set from Lands’ End is a fantastic pick. We love the U.S.-grown Supima cotton fibers that weave together in a percale pattern to create a sheet that’s nicely crisp and wonderfully soft.

We found caring for these soft sheets as easy as tossing them in the washing machine. They aren’t finicky at all—they don't have unusual care instructions. Our test sheet set came in a darker hue, which meant it was easy to wash them alongside like colors. They hold up and maintain their color with regular washings, too. (Yes, even with regular drying!)

The only potential drawback we noted is that hot sleepers may not experience much of a cooling effect from these soft cotton sheets. While they’re relatively breathable and nicely crisp, these sheets may not be the coolest choice for those who run warm year-round. However, we think their texture and durability make them well worth it if you're looking for soft sheets.

  • More affordable than many options

What We Don't Like
  • Stains may not come out completely

  • Limited sizes

Smooth, breathable, and well-constructed, the Nordstrom at Home Percale Sheet Set is one of our favorite sets of percale sheets. The 200-thread-count percale sheets offer the perfect balance between softness and crispness that we couldn’t get enough of when lab testing them. Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed with the texture of these sheets, which were so soft that they felt pre-washed. Additionally, they looked and felt high-quality, with no loose threads, snags, or color fading.

In The Lab, we found these sheets to be very airy and breathable, with sufficient moisture management to help keep you comfortable through the night. The material didn't feel like it trapped heat, either, making these sheets a great pick for year-round use. During our stain test, however, we found that neither the oil nor the foundation came off completely. In our durability test, scratching sandpaper to the surface of the sheet discolored the fabric slightly, but the material seemed to be intact otherwise. If we had any complaints, it would be that tough stains could be a bit difficult to remove from these sheets and that they're only available in queen, king, and California king sizes. But overall, they're a super soft set that performed admirably in our testing, and we recommend them.

How It Performed Long-Term

One common challenge when choosing sheets is that the texture can change after using and washing them. That's why we're happy to report that after a month of testing this Nordstrom Home set, they held up well and their texture didn't seem to change. In addition to being soft and super comfortable, they proved to be very cool—so much so that we'd now even recommend them for hot sleepers. We think they offer a lot of value, especially considering their reasonable price.

  • Not solid color choices

Soft, breathable, and comfortable at a price that’s impressively budget-friendly, the Threshold 400 Thread Count Printed Performance Sheet Set is a steal of a find. In our tests, we confirmed that these cotton sheets are nicely durable, but they’re also soft and cozy to climb into. And, with perks like deep 18-inch pockets, a labeled fitted sheet, and strong elastic, they’ll cover all of your bedding basics. We found that they offer just the right balance of comfort—the medium-weight sheets can keep you warm without overheating you or making you feel smothered.

Unfortunately, after even just a single wash, we did find that the sheets’ pattern can fade. However, we appreciate the soft 400-thread-count construction and design of the fitted sheet, and we would recommend them if you're on a budget.

  • Gets softer after washing

  • Durable

What We Don't Like
  • Prone to wrinkling

  • Small elastic

When it comes to softness, it’s hard to top the silky feel of bamboo fibers—and we love Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton Sheets after testing them hands-on. Created from a blend of bamboo viscose and cotton, these sheets have a soft texture right from out of the package. Even better: We found that they grew silkier and softer after washing them.

While these sheets aren't the most breathable bamboo sheets we've tested, we noted that the material is cool to the touch. We didn't notice any change in temperature after lying in them for a few minutes, either. So if you're looking for cooling bed sheets, you'll be glad to know these should be comfortable for warm nights and hot sleepers. The sheets also did quite well in our durability testing—swiping sandpaper across the material didn't seem to damage it too much. We observed just a bit of pilling, which we thought was impressive. Plus, the coffee, oil, and makeup stains we applied during testing improved dramatically after washing the sheets.

One unexpected quirk of this set is that the elastic is quite small. It stretched enough for us to get it on the bed without too much difficulty, and it also provided a nice, snug fit once on. Additionally, these soft bamboo sheets do wrinkle, even right out of the wash. But we don't consider that a deal-breaker.

  • Top sheet is an additional cost

If you’ve been searching for crisp, lightweight Egyptian cotton sheets that are also soft and inviting, try Parachute’s Percale Sheet Set. We love how these cotton sheets get softer with wear and washing, thanks to their long-staple fibers. If you’re a fan of crispness, the percale weave will also impress. We found this sheet set soft at first touch and the fabric more inviting and cozy than your typical set of crisp cotton sheets. Plus, we found that the fabric even gets softer post-wash. The lived-in, slightly wrinkled material is also very breathable and cool.

With a higher price tag, these sheets are definitely a bit of a splurge. And you’ll want to note that if you want a fitted and flat sheet, the flat sheet comes as an additional cost. However, based on our testing, we think the high price is justified based on the softness, construction, and breathability.

What We Don’t Like

Hot sleepers, Olive + Crate’s Eucalyptus Cooling Sheets live up to their promise: They’re lightweight and airy enough to allow for airflow, and they’re sumptuously soft to sleep on.

We raved about their cooling capabilities in our testing notes. This set takes the top spot of all the eucalyptus bed sheets we've tested. They're woven out of Tencel lyocell fibers sourced from eucalyptus, which makes for an ultra-breathable material you'll appreciate on warm days. We also appreciate that these sheets are also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. But where they truly shine is comfort. We love their silky, smooth, and soft texture.

The only slight drawback to these extra-soft sheets? They can shrink slightly after a wash. However, it shouldn’t be enough to affect how they fit on your bed, based on our own testing experience.

The softest bed sheets can also be quite durable, especially if you opt for the Nest Bedding Luxury Tencel Sheet Set. These sheets feel silky and stunningly soft at first touch, and their fibers (which are actually made from renewable wood resources) feel wonderfully smooth. After putting them to the test for a full month, we noted that they're buttery soft and super silky.

In addition to their soft feel, these sheets are also nicely breathable and moisture-wicking for a comfortable night of sleep year-round. The fabric won’t change, shrink, or pill with regular wear and washing, either, making them a great everyday choice.

During our testing, we did note that these soft bed sheets will wrinkle easily if not removed from the dryer promptly. The longer the sheets sit, the more they’ll wrinkle—so keep that in mind if you’re someone who prefers a perfectly smooth sheet.

  • Top sheet especially prone to wrinkles

If you prefer an organic set of sheets, Quince’s Organic Bamboo Viscose Sheet Set fits the bill. We raved about their softness in our testing. We found them to be incredibly comfortable and cozy to sleep on. Made from bamboo viscose, these sheets are STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX certified. While bamboo-derived textiles aren't necessarily more eco-friendly (it all depends on the entire manufacturing process!), bamboo has the potential to be a more sustainable option than some other materials.

In testing, we loved how these sheets feel silky and oh-so-luxurious from the first touch. We appreciate that they're temperature regulating, too. In addition to their soft construction, these organic bamboo sheets performed well after washing. We didn't have any issues with the fitted sheet corners popping off or with any shrinkage after running it through the washing machine. Rather, they stay comfortable and hold up with even frequent washing well for the long haul. The only potential issue may be their wrinkly nature right out of the wash. In our testing, the top sheet was more prone to wrinkling, even after being on the bed, than the other pieces.

With a soft sheen and cozy texture, Boll & Branch’s Signature Hemmed Sheet Set feels like luxury. These cotton sheets are made with high-quality, long-staple organic cotton fibers, with details like a 17-inch pocket and strong, secure elastic banding. In our testing, we felt the softness of the sheets improve with each fresh use. Plus, in addition to their buttery softness and nice weight, we found that after washing, these sateen sheets were free of pilling, shrinkage, and loose threads.

These soft bed sheets are definitely an investment and come with a higher price than most of our other picks. Additionally, they do wrinkle easily; if you aren’t a fan of wrinkles, you’ll want to make sure they don’t sit in a laundry basket or inside the dryer long after washing. (Or consider opting for one of our favorite wrinkle-free sheet sets.) Ultimately, though, we noted that the high quality of these sheets makes them a quality pick for anyone who wants soft, luxury-level sheets.

Warm up and wrap yourself in super-soft flannel during the colder months of the year with L.L. Bean’s Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheet Set. While flannel sheets are usually thicker and heavier in weight than other materials, they’re a top-tier choice for colder sleepers and chilly evenings. This set, which is made out of brushed cotton flannel in a 5-ounce weight, is wonderfully plush and cozy. In addition to describing them as comfy in our testing, we pinpointed their softness and weight as top traits in particular.

However, these soft flannel bed sheets can show some signs of wear after washing. We noticed shrinkage after the first wash, as well as some light pilling. It’s common for there to be lint buildup after the first wash, too, with these flannel sheets. However, when it comes to a plush and warm bed, these are a worthwhile investment.

Final Verdict

Our pick for the softest bed sheets is the Lands’ End 300 Thread Count Premium Supima Cotton Percale Sheet Set, which is crafted out of Supima cotton for a comfy level of softness that washes and wears well over time. The durability combined with a crisp-yet-soft feel make them a great all-around choice. For soft sheets on a budget, we also like Threshold’s 400 Thread Count Printed Performance Sheet Set. Affordably priced with extras like a labeled fitted sheet, deep pockets, and resistance to shrinking, wrinkling, and pilling, they’re a soft set built to last.

How We Tested the Bed Sheets

For this roundup, we researched the most beloved, top-rated sheets on the market and put them to the test in The Lab and in our homes. Over the years, we’ve tested over 200 sheets and continue to do so regularly. When testing sheets, we evaluate them on the basis of quality by inspecting the sheets both before and after washing them. We look for any loose threads, pilling, snags, and imperfections in the stitching, dye, or pattern. We also note any specifics about each sheet, including the material, thread count, and weave. Next, we assess the texture of each sheet, considering its thickness, softness, structure, and smoothness. At that point, we make the bed with the sheets, observing how snugly the fitted sheet fits over a mattress, whether there is any shifting or bunching, and how it drapes over the bed. We also pay special attention to the depth of the fitted sheet and whether or not there is any excess fabric hanging over the sides.

We then test the sheets’ breathability by lying underneath them and seeing how much airflow the sheet allows through. In lab testing, we place a drop of water in the middle of the sheet to see how moisture-wicking the material was, by observing how quickly and how much the water disperses over the area. To evaluate the durability of each sheet, we perform spill tests and pour things like coffee, oil, and foundation over each sheet, noting how easy the stain is to remove and whether or not we can tell that it was previously stained. We also carefully follow care instructions and judge whether there are any signs of wear, imperfections, wrinkles, or shrinkage post-wash. Finally, we assess the sheets’ value by comparing their retail prices with their overall quality.

In addition to our standard in-lab testing, for many of these picks, we conducted long-term home testing to see how the sheets held up over time, checking in after one, three, and six months. When long-term testing, we gather the sheet sets that scored well in The Lab and take them home to note how they perform in real-world situations. We consider not only the quality, texture, breathability, durability, and value, but also how (if at all) the sheets enhance our day-to-day lives. We consider how the sheets changed in texture after consistent washes, our sleep quality during those six weeks, and whether or not we would recommend the products to a friend or family member.

To compile this list of the softest sheets on the market, our editors analyzed lab testing and at-home testing scores and insights, along with our supplemental research.

What to Look for in Soft Bed Sheets

Material

The inviting texture of a good set of soft bed sheets usually comes from two key details: the sheet material (or fibers) and how that material is constructed. Certain materials are naturally softer than others, and these are great options to start your search with. Cotton sheets, particularly 100 percent cotton varieties like Parachute’s Percale Sheet Set, are often soft thanks to their smooth and airy texture. Flannel sheets with extra-plush brushed cotton, like L.L. Bean’s Ultrasoft Comfort Flannel Sheet Set, are also notoriously soft.

Bamboo, eucalyptus, and other sheets made out of renewable resources can also have a high level of softness, like Brooklyn Bedding Deep Pocket Bamboo Cotton Sheets. However, these types of sheets often have a silkier soft feel—they’re sleeker and often a bit more slippery, which lends a different softness. If you prefer lightweight sheets, this silky texture may be a good choice.

Weave

Along with the material, the weave of a sheet set can play a role in softness. For example, a percale cotton sheet will feel different in softness than a sateen cotton sheet. The weave determines the direction of the yarn or fibers, giving a sheet set its texture. When you’re searching for the softest option, sateen sheets are a popular choice; in sheets like Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set, our Best Luxury pick, this means you’ll feel a smooth, softened texture. Percale sheets, on the other hand, can also be wonderfully soft, but their weave lends itself to crispness, too.

Thread Count

A higher thread count doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a softer set of sheets. Thread count can help you determine how many yarns are used per square inch across a piece of fabric. But it doesn’t always mean that a truly soft yarn or fiber was used to make that material. Thread count may matter when you’re picking out 100 percent cotton sheets, as a higher count can sometimes enhance softness. But generally, we have not noticed a strong correlation between thread count and sheet quality in our testing. Most of the sheets we've tested have been in the 200 to 400 thread count range. Many of our top-scoring sheets have had a thread count of 300—the Lands’ End 300 Thread Count Premium Supima Cotton Percale Sheet Set, our Best Overall pick, is a great example of this!

FAQ
  • What are the softest bed sheets made out of?

In our opinion, the softest bed sheets are often made out of 100 percent cotton. The type of cotton can vary—brushed cotton, jersey, and Egyptian cotton are all soft picks. However, for those who like a silkier kind of softness, eco-minded materials like eucalyptus and bamboo may be a better fit.

  • Which type of cotton is the softest?

We think you can’t go wrong with a cotton sheet set. Whether you’re opting for organic cotton or Egyptian cotton, this material is a staple in soft sheet sets. Just make sure to take a look at the weave; sateen and percale are often tried-and-true soft picks, but they can vary depending on whether long or short fibers are used.

  • What cotton thread count is the softest?

Like we mentioned above, thread count isn’t always the best indicator of a sheet set’s softness. When it comes to 100 percent cotton sets, you can often find nicely soft picks within the 300 to 500 thread count range. For other materials, like bamboo or flannel, you may not need to worry about thread count at all. Instead, look more at the fabric itself and how it’s woven to get a sense of true softness.
