Valspar Chooses This Beautiful Blue as Their 2024 Color of the Year

If you’re planning on tackling a home refresh, renovation, or room re-do in the near future, then Valspar has you covered with its stunning pick for 2024 Color of the Year. The paint brand has officially announced that next year will be all about Renew Blue: “a balanced blue with a touch of grayed sea-green that focuses on wellness and comfort,” the brand says.

Ahead of the official announcement, we connected with Sue Kim, Director of Color Marketing for Valspar, who shared how this beautiful hue is perfect for anyone looking to create a more restful, relaxed, and meditative mood in their home next year. 

A Selection Inspired by Nature

In recent years, pulling from nature and bringing the outside in has been a major point of design inspiration. We’ve seen it in everything from the cottagecore and fairycore aesthetics to the rise of biophilic design to a call for more organic decor pieces. Renew Blue is another reflection of our need for more nature in our homes.

“Inspired by fleeting elements like fog, mist, clouds, and glacier lakes, Renew Blue elevates the everyday mood, encourages self-expression, and evokes a feeling of balance and calm, with a twist of unique spontaneity," Kim says.

Calling the stunning tone a new neutral, Kim notes it’s the perfect shade for mixing and matching across styles and applications.

A Tone That Harmonizes

While most 2023 Colors of the Year were all about blatantly warm tones, Vaslpar's pick for 2024 is a slight shift away from the rosy reds, oranges, and pinks that dominated our feeds this year. According to Kim, that’s intentional—in fact, the Valspar team sees the selection of Renew Blue as a collective new chapter in the consumer color journey. 

“Instead of an abrupt change from warm to cool, Renew Blue offers a simple step forward by harmonizing with warm shades, and even grays,” Kim says.

Renew Blue Creates a Natural Focus on Simplicity

In recent years, Valspar has announced an annual selection of twelve Colors of the Year. But for 2024, Kim says the brand is prioritizing simplicity. This, according to Kim, only showcases its versatility.

“Renew Blue offers limitless design possibilities while emphasizing control, consistency, and equilibrium within the home,” she says. “Our home is a space where we are creating a sense of comfort and slowing down.”

By naming Renew Blue as Valspar’s sole 2024 color of the year, the brand hopes consumers feel they have a shade that can anchor any design project. 

It Pairs Beautifully With a Range of Colors

One of the best things about Renew Blue is that it’s adaptable and easy to pair with so many other colors. 

According to Kim, her personal favorite pairings all create a sense of comfort. She particularly loves the color alongside a warm taupe, like like Valspar’s Perfect Backdrop, with a pastel gray, or layered atop a pale tint like the brand’s Dusk in the Valley.

Renew Blue Can Be Used Anywhere

As the brand proves, Renew Blue isn’t a color that’s limited to just one room of the house. Its versatility means it can be used both inside and out.

Its blend of blue and green makes it particularly perfect for an entryway or patio area. For uses indoors, Valspar suggests using it in any space that calls for a sense of calm and self-care. In bathrooms, it looks particularly beautiful with vintage metallic finishes, while it works well as an accent along baseboards and ceilings in larger spaces.

While 2024 might still sound far away, one thing's for sure. With Valspar's latest announcement, we can all hope for a calm, relaxed, and balanced year ahead.
